Vincent Cangello Obituary

Published by Heritage Oaks Memorial Chapel Funeral & Cremation Services on Apr. 27, 2019.
Vincent Woodrow (Woody) Cangello, M.D. was born on November 26, 1925 on Thanksgiving Day. He passed peacefully and pain free at Sunrise Senior Living in Rocklin, CA on April 27. 2019. He was 93 years old. All his education from grade school through Medical Internship was with the Catholic schools. He graduated high school early (fall of 1943) to join the Army in Feb. 1944. Later he volunteered to be with the 10th Mountain Division (ski troop). He received a Bronze Star for helping a wounded soldier to an Italian farm house. His ability to speak Italian was used to convince the Italian family to keep the wounded soldier for the night. He returned to the USA on August 1945 and received Honorable Discharge in May 1946. He went to St. Johns University in Brooklyn, Georgetown Medical School and Internship in Buffalo, NY. He took further studies to be a GYN Oncologist Surgeon. In November 1959, he joined a fellow OB-GYN Doctor in Oakland, CA. The partnership didn't work out. A few months later the Nuns at Providence Hospital helped him to open his own practice. He continued his practice in Oakland until 2002. • Vince enjoyed flying a twin engine Cessna 310 with 3 other guys. The highlight of owning that plane was to take 3 daughters to the East Coast to visit relatives. (Laura was in Europe). The girls each had their duties and they had some interesting and eventful things happen. • The summer of 1973, Vince took 3 of his daughters to Russia for a medical meeting. (Sue had other obligations.) He said the most frightening moment was when they arrived at the airport and he was in a cage to get through security and then his daughters followed. He prayed that nothing would happen to his daughters as he no way to get to them. There were many restrictions at that time but a very educational visit. • After his quadruple by-pass in 1997(which got complicated since he had 7 surgeries and 42 days in the hospital), he started writing a book about Health Care. It was a lifelong dream for him. He wrote 3 books and had them copyrighted in the Library of Congress. o Health Care Reform Facts and Fiction: o The Falling Giants: America's Private Practicing Physicians , A Doctor's Story o Marching Toward a Single Payer with Politicians regulating your Healthcare • He was so proud to develop his own web-site: Health Care Reform Educational Institute. He wanted to educate the general public about the varieties of health care around the world. He spent some time in England with a British Doctor and found how the National Health System worked. He became a member of the prestigious Royal Society of Medicine. RSM had a hotel facility (where we stayed while in London) with one of the largest libraries on Health Care on Wimpole Street. We spent many visits in London doing research in their library. He developed a web-site: HCREI (HealthCareReform.com) and was researching the politics of Health Care and posted information on his web-page. He was not a typist so he did all his work with 2 fingers. He got pretty efficient and fast with 2 fingers. • He had time to play tennis, twice a week. One day a week he played Singles and another day he played doubles with 3 other colleagues for over 20 years. He found he couldn't golf since he had to be ready for any on-call baby delivery. In his day, there were no cell phones, which made it impossible to be available "on call". Vince handled all his calls unless we were out of town. • He was always busy and involved in many committees and member of many medical organizations. The most rewarding organizations were: Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Fellow of American College of Surgeons, Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine (England). He leaves behind his wife, Marilyn; 4 daughters: Laura McWeeney, Kathy Cangello, Susan (Steve)Fahey and Mary Beth (Bill)Schenk; 4 Grandchildren: Chris (Brooke) Fahey, Joe (Carolyn) Fahey, Katie (Andrew) Gelfand, and Peggy McWeeney and 4 Great Grandchildren: Madeline Fahey, Sophia Fahey, Auggie Gelfand and Evie Gelfand, several nephews and niece. HE WILL BE MISSED BY ALL HIS FAMILY! Thank You to the following: • Dr. David Patella: who endured my constant questions. • Father Eric: Vince appreciated his many blessings. While at Sunrise Memory Care, Vince said his Rosary everyday and sometimes twice a day. • Sunrise Senior Living: for making sure Vince was cared for and loved by the staff for about 1 ½ years. Vince wanted to help the residents and thought maybe Sunrise would hire him. • Snowline Hospice: for overseeing his care the past few months. • Michael Beck: my nephew, who helped me locate a place for Vince, (Sunrise), moving and put together his military shadow box. • Sue Fahey: who helped me through arrangements, cleaning his place, supported me in those rough times, etc. • Friends, Family & Support Groups: Thank you for your support. It was most helpful during the last few years.

Today I was sitting at my computer thinking of my life in California and the people who had touched my life. Dr. Cangello was one of those people. My first gyn and my go to doctor and we had a great relationship. I could confide in him and always get scheduled in. I literally trusted him with my life. He was a good good human being and I am so saddened to hear of his passing. I used to kid him regarding the number of kids he had and scolded him saying that is why I couldnt have any because he was getting them all lol. I miss him and that is what made me look him up. Time passes so quickly and I imagine at 93 is life was just so full. I was sixteen when I met him and he had diagnosed my mom and saved her life when everyone else kept saying she had a bladder infection when actually it was her kidneys and by the time she got to Dr. C she had one half kidney on one side and a third on the other. He also delivered my sister. I am now 67 years old and still think of that wonderful man. What a wonderful soul.

I miss you so much Dad. I miss your smile, you telling me to "keep smiling " and even your healthcare lectures. I have so many memories to comfort me. I know you are in the arms of God and finally have your parish.

Surgery by Dr Cangello enabled me to have two wonderful sons. I am very thankful. Years later, I wrote and typed healthcare articles for Dr Cangello which were entitled Healthcare Reform Institute . He was an excellent surgeon and man .

He was an amazing and accomplished man. He helped many lives into this world and saved others with surgery and medicine. He travelled the world studying and discussing health care. He is an American success story as the self made son of immigrants. His good work is done. He is at peace.

Dr. Cangello was a dear friend for more than 40 years. He helped me through some very difficult issues in my life. Certainly one of most important people in my life. Honored to be close to him and his family. God bless him and the entire family.
