Paul Baker Obituary

Paul Baker, a Garland native, was born at home on Third Street, as he called it, on Tuesday, October 26, 1937. He was the third of four sons born to mother, Ruby Anderson Baker, and father, Andy Frank Baker. Paul attended elementary and middle schools in Garland; and graduated from Garland High School in 1956. He loved the lifelong friendships he made with his many classmates; and he loved sports, especially basketball. He also attended Arlington State, now U.T. Arlington. Paul went to work for Kraft Foods in Garland. Then in 1963, Paul began his insurance career with State Farm Insurance, opening his office in his hometown, Garland. His agency flourished and grew rapidly. As many large corporations do, State Farm had a program, The President's Club, offering special recognition and rewards to those agents throughout the United States who excelled in production, retention and service. An agent could earn the designation of President's Club member for production in any one of five different types of insurance. Then, if the agent reached those goals in all five types of insurance, the agent earned the highest designation of Lifetime President's Club member. Today, out of approximately 17,000 State Farm Agents throughout the United States, there are only about 500 Lifetime President's Club members. Paul was one of that elite group. Throughout the 60's and 70's, Paul loved raising his three children, Bart, Penny and Brett. He was involved in their school activities including softball, baseball and T-ball, and he served as Vice President of Watson Elementary PTA. He was instrumental in establishing the first YMCA in Garland; and for many years, he coached and managed their sports program. In June, 2013, Paul celebrated 50 years as a State Farm insurance agent and received a commendation of this achievement from then President George W. Bush. But, perhaps what was even more special to Paul was being elected to the Garland High School Distinguished Alumni Association in 2018. Paul loved to travel too. He visited many cities here in the U.S.; and over the years, his travels also took him to Paris, London, Germany, Austria, Greece, Italy and the Amalfi Coast and China, and also included cruises to Alaska and the Mediterranean. Paul especially loved the last quarter century of his life spent with his wife, Georgia. They worked together, traveled together, and they loved spending time at home together, whether that was here at their home in Rowlett on Lake Ray Hubbard or at their ranch in the Ouachita mountains of Arkansas. Paul departed from this world peacefully on the morning of Tuesday, December 17, 2019 with Georgia by his side. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ruby Anderson Baker and Andy Frank Baker, and by his two older brothers, James and Frank. He is survived by his three children, Bart Baker and wife Kathy, Penny Baker Martin and husband, Lawrence, and Brett Baker, as well as his brother, Don Baker and wife, Paula. He is also survived by grandchildren Tiffany Shortridge, Rebekah Baker Jaeschke, Robert Baker, Dustin Paul Baker, Chase Baker and Gramm Baker as well as eight great-grandchildren with the ninth due in May, 2020. Paul is also survived by his loving and devoted wife, Georgia. He was loved tremendously and he will be deeply, deeply missed.

Mr. Paul Baker, Thank you for sending a gas card to me every birthday! Your kind gestures and the professional customer service me and my family always received was astonishing. While we are still with State Farm, we have not been able to find an agent that was as caring and passionate about their job like your team was! Thank you for serving so many families.

Finally, third try. Mr. Paul
was my S F agent since 1981. Although I only had 3-4 claims during this period. Mr. Paul never turned a one down. His staff always first class, as was Mr. Paul. Great agent, great Texan!!!!

My family lived down the street from the Bakers when they lived on Monica. My parents were clients of Paul's when he first began and were with him until their passing. My sister and I and our families are still clients and I have made over 530 monthly payments to his agency! He came to both of my parents funerals. Such a Great Guy....they don't make guys like him anymore

On behalf of Sherri, Laura (and Byron) - Paul was our close friend, next door neighbor, State Farm agent, and Laura's grandfather by proxy. We shared good times with Paul, his children and grandchildren, and George. He and Byron (also deceased) were "partners in crime", and I bet heaven will be even a richer place now! Anything I say here cannot measure up to the love and life we were fortunate to share with him! He was larger than life! Goodbye, dearest Paul!

Love,
Sherri

Georgia, we have not had the privilege of knowing you and Paul outside of business, but these wonderful comments here about Paul come as no surprise. I knew as soon as I met you both that you were people of integrity and cared for those you interacted with in business.

Dave and I send our prayers for you and your family as you grieve the loss of a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. I look forward to getting to know Paul better in Heaven.

Paul's famous words, I tell you what...

Respect, dignity, honor, and hard work are the words that come to mind when I think about my Uncle Paul. His passing leaves a huge void in all of our hearts. He was loved by my entire family and he exemplified what a awesome uncle should be.

Georgia we love you so much, and words cannot describe our sympathy for you during this most difficult time. Paul was your soulmate and you made him the happiest man in Texas.

Penny, Bart, and Brett. We are so terribly sad for your loss. Your dad loved you all more than you will ever know. We spent nearly every New Years for over 25 years with your dad and Georgia in Las Vegas. He always told me how much he loved each of you. He might have appeared to be tough on the outside, but his love for you three was always present.

I choose to celebrate Paul's zest for life, and his accomplishments. He may be gone, but he will never be forgotten. I love you Paul.

Paul was the Granddad to my two boys Dustin Paul Baker who is named after him and Chase Baker. They were so blessed to have him as their Granddad. They enjoyed all the knowledge he gave to them and just being able to talk to him about anything and always trusting his advice. He was always so involved with them. This is going to be a very hard Christmas for my boys since this will be the first Christmas Eve in their lifetime not to be spending the night with their Granddad and waking up Christmas Morning with him. Thank you for being such a wonderful grandfather you will be missed so much.
