Richard Morrissey Obituary

Richard M. Morrissey died at his home in Beverly on February 10, 2020; he was 95 years of age. He was born in Charlestown on July 13, 1924 to the late Richard & Mary (Ricketts) Morrissey. Richard was raised in Charlestown, graduated from Cathedral High School in Boston before entering the US Navy. Mr. Morrissey served his country with pride in the US Navy during WWII. After his discharge from the US Navy he joined the Boston Fire Department. Richard was a Boston Firefighter for 40 years from 1949-1989; serving first on Ladder 22 in Charlestown, then on Pump Engine 50 in Charlestown and later as a LT on the Fireboat in Boston Harbor before retiring. Mr. Morrissey also worked a side job wallpapering and painting to support his family. He and his late wife Mildred, who passed away on November 12, 2019, moved to Melrose in 1966 and then to Beverly in 2015. Richard enjoyed taking bus trips with his wife, enjoyed walking all over the City of Melrose daily and enjoyed playing golf at Mount Hood Golf Course in Melrose with his friends. Mr. Morrissey could always be found working around his home; fixing something or outside working on the landscaping. He was also a big Boston Red Sox fan and was a regular blood donor at the Red Cross. Richard was the beloved husband of 68 years to the late Mildred A. (Tryder) Morrissey. Loving father of Marie Ebersole of Natick, Jeanne Gamble of Beverly, Richard Morrissey & his wife Maureen of Nottingham, NH, and Christine Morrissey of Beverly. Cherished grandfather of Jay Ebersole & his wife Emma of Attleboro. Also survived by his beloved cat Leonardo. Visiting Hours will be held at the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St., Melrose, on, Monday, February 17, 2020 from 4:00-7:00 PM. Funeral procession from the Gately Funeral Home on Tuesday February 18th at 9AM, followed by a Funeral Mass at Incarnation Church, 425 Upham St., Melrose at 10AM. Interment with military honors to follow the Mass at Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose. Relatives & friends are respectfully invited to attend. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Richard's name to the Home for Little Wanderers, 10 Guest St. Boston 02135

Dick was my lieutenant for several years at Engine 50. He was a great boss, an excellent firefighter and a wonderful guy.
My apologies for not being able to attend the services for Dick.
My condolences to the entire Morrissey family.
