Cherie Owens Obituary

Published by R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A. - Rising Sun on Feb. 13, 2021.
Cherie Ann Owens, age 77 of Rising Sun, Maryland, died Saturday, February 13, 2021, of ovarian cancer. Cherie was born December 17, 1943 in Atchison, KS to the late Juanita (Potter) Markham and Earl Baughman. She was preceded in death by her older sister, Kay (Baughman) Pullum. "Cher," as she was known by many, grew up in an Air Force family and moved nearly every two years, living for a time in Panama, Puerto Rico, and Texas. She graduated from Armijo High School, Fairfield, CA and later attended Goucher College and Cecil Community College in Maryland. Cher retired from W.L. Gore in 2008, where she worked for 19 years as an administrative assistant. In earlier years she was a civil employee with the U.S. Air Force and later worked at the Cecil County Library (serving for a time as the Rising Sun Branch Librarian). Cherie is survived by her husband of 57 years, the Reverend Harold (Hal) Owens; three children: Paul, Rachel Elisabeth and Luke (and their spouses); six grandchildren: Katherine Maria, Matthew, Austin, Nick, Ethan and Eleni; three great granddaughters: Addison, Delaney and Elodie; and her younger sister, Jeanne. Cherie was a gifted artist and quilter. Her paintings expressed her gentle and subdued personality and made her home an art gallery. Her passion in these later years was quilting. She loved putting together pieces of colorful cloth and making artistic wall hangings and warm blankets. During the last few months, she tried to make quilts for each of her children and their spouses, each of her grandchildren and three great granddaughters. Several of these and twenty-five others still need to be quilted. Our heartfelt thanks to Cher's friend, Sheila Wolle, for volunteering to quilt all of these on her quilting machine, so that Cher's intent can be fulfilled. We thank the Kaufman Cancer Center and Amedisys Hospice for their ministry. Both are top-notch and their care meant much to us. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either the Kaufman Cancer Center or the Amedisys Hospice Foundation, sent in care of R.T. Foard Funeral Home, Rising Sun, Maryland. A celebration of Cherie's life will be held privately and at the convenience of the family due to Covid restrictions.

I am so sorry to hear about Cher's passing. I used to run into her in town now and again, and she always had a smile on her face. I have many fond memories of Cher from Janes United Methodist Church and from babysitting Luke. Cher and Hal always made me feel like I was one of the family! I know your hearts are broken right now, but I know that your memories of Cher will eventually bring a smile to your face rather than tears. I will leave you with a quote that I read not too long ago: "How blessed am I to have had someone in my life who makes saying goodbye so hard!" Please know that I am thinking of you and praying for you at this difficult time.

It's been so many years since I've seen Mrs. Owens. However, I have such fond memories of her kind and gentle personality while I attended Janes Methodist Church as a child. I remember being incredibly impressed that she never got agitated and was always soft spoken. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

My deepest condolences to Hal, Paul, Rachel, Luke and their families. Cher was my best friend. We had so much fun quilting, enjoying tea, great conversations. And I can't forget about our trips to Joann Fabrics, lunch at our favorite tea place, visiting Cher at her mother's house in California. I will always treasure these memories. I will miss her everyday.

Ron and I were sad to hear of Cher's passing. Cher was a very special person we both had the opportunity to work with. Kind, compassionate, funny, always willing to help. Ron chose her for the Water Carrier award because of all she did for her fellow associates. An award well deserved. Many of us at Gore remember and still talk about the basket weaving classes she arranged. There was a lot of laughter during those classes. We have many fond memories of Cher, which we will forever cherish. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family.
