John Ludlow, age 74, a longtime Wakefield resident, died Monday, February 21 at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital. Born in Newark, New Jersey on March 27, 1947 he was the son of the late Theodore and Agnes (Stone) Ludlow. Mr. Ludlow was raised in Newark, Delaware, where his family's home was abutting the campus of The University of Delaware: thus beginning a lifelong love for the UDel Blue Hens. He was a fan of all of the sports teams, but most especially their football program. Mr. Ludlow played high school basketball and tennis and ran cross country. He continued to play tennis in college. His later sporting interests included his participation in the Wakefield tennis community; as well as his coaching of youth tennis and baseball. He loved to watch his son's sporting events and was an avid Red Sox fan. Mr. Ludlow graduated from Lincoln University in Oxford, Pennsylvania and began his career in Towson, Maryland. He was the Physical Education Director of the Towson Family YMCA before he and his wife moved to Wakefield in 1973 to assume the role of Physical Education Director of the former Wakefield YMCA and then on to the Beverly YMCA. He ultimately retired as a senior claims adjuster for One Beacon Insurance in 2012. Many will remember John for his annual hosting of the Greybeard's Pirate Party in Truro, Massachusetts over the last 15 years. He will also be sorely missed by his beloved 21 year old cat "Molly." Mr. Ludlow loved Molly even though her coloring was not orange – a trait which he had a particular love for among felines. John is survived by his beloved wife, Ann (Gooding) Ludlow; his son, Michael Ludlow and his wife La'Tasha of Scituate; his grandchidlren, Mia and Jacob Ludlow; his sister Mary Duket of West Newton; his brother-in-law John Gooding and his wife Julee of West Chester, PA; as well as several cousins, nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. His Funeral Service will be held in the Old South United Methodist Church, 6 Salem St., Reading on Thursday, March 10 at 11am. Visitation for relatives and friends will be held at the McDonald Funeral Home, 19 Yale Ave., Wakefield on Wednesday, March 9 from 4-7pm. Burial will take place in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations in John's name may be made to PAWS, 411 Lowell Street, Wakefield, MA 01880.

Just found about John. I am heartbroken. I knew John through job. Such a decent person, John was. We used to talk a lot about football. His favorite athlete was Joe Flaco due to Delaware connection. You will be missed John. RIP my dear friend.

My sincerest condolences to Ann and the Ludlow family. Meeting John back in 2005 was literally a life changing event for me. John played a large part in start of the relationship I now have with my partner for life. Although Rich and John had been friends many years prior to that, John instantly welcomed me into their circle of friends. We had many great times together and our annual traditions will never be forgotten. I hope the many wonderful memories will carry your family through this time of sorrow.

To the Ludlow family, my name is Florence Flanagan you do not know me. I was with two of my friends sitting beside John at Sabitinos restaurant on that Thursday night. He had been talking to us. He told us of his wife who he frequented Sabatinos restaurant with he also told us of his son who had graduated high school in 1994 and he absolutely glowed when I asked him if he had any grandchildren . We touched on many subjects for about a half hour. And when he left he wished us a good evening And asked if we would possibly be back the next Thursday because he would like us to meet his wife. I said we most likely will. As he left I thought to myself what a nice gentleman he is and hopefully would run into him again. It was an absolute pleasure to meet him I am so sorry for what happened that evening after he left the restaurant. However I was relieved when I heard that he had survived for a few days because at least his family has a chance to say goodbye to him. It truly would've been horrible if he passed without his family around because he cherish them so much. I thought I might drop by the wake on Wednesday evening but I didn't want to upset anybody. So I thought I would just reach out to you so you could know what it happened that evening before he collapsed . My email address is . If you have any questions feel free to email me . I want to extend my deepest condolences. He was clearly a wonderful man.

What am I going to do about our sports bantering now that John is gone? It won't be the same. I will surely miss him - I already do! Rest in heavenly peace, John. I will see you and Keith on the other side. ❤

I met John when I started at OneBeacon on 2005. After I moved to wakefield last year he always kept me informed of fun things around town. I sure will miss his orange cat posts.

John will be missed by his loving family, his Kittie and all of us friends from NHS and University of Delaware community. It was so much fun to see him and Ann on the Cape a few years ago and keep up with our friendship through Facebook. Love and prayers go out to the whole family at this sad time.

My deepest condolences to John's family. As a teen I worked with John at the Western Y in Newark, Delaware. He was always kind, patient, and upbeat. His choice to attend a HBCU way back in the early 70's made an impression on me. I am so glad he had a long life that included his dear bride.

John was just a "good guy." Never saw him upset and always a gentleman. Excellent tennis player, who would play "just aggressive" enough to meet you. Soft spoken family man. Thoughts are with Ann and Michael. Rest in peace. Dave Irons
