I'm so deeply sorry to see that Dr. Hewitt passed away last year. He was such an incredible person! He was more than a physician...he was a dynamic energy, a compassionate ear, sharer of adventures, comedian, and endearing human being. He was so special, that I switched doctor's offices 3 times, so I could remain his patient. He was a caretaker of human spirits by nature and genuinely left his mark on all the souls he met. I am eternally grateful to have been one of them!

You name it. We could share anything with this renaissance man of empathy, intellect, and the biggest of hearts. A child of the 60s, he always made time for a clip from Bob Dylan to Who Killed JFK to video clips from Motown, blue-eyed and darker than blue. His goodness, kindness, and generosity of spirit remain forever in my heart. Hidee hidee hidee hi, neighbor

I am deeply saddened to learn of John's passing. John was a roommate and dear friend when we met at Tufts University in 1970. During the many years that followed, John was a caring friend and teacher. He had a great love of life and cared deeply for those with whom he came in contact. John taught us many things about caring for and respecting each other. I can recall the many experiences when he would share his passion for African-American art, music and culture, and photography. He loved his family, and in many ways, he was a model on how to be a caring and compassionate person of faith and conviction. I will miss you, Dr. John. Watch over your family and friends. Peace be with you.

John was smart, funny, wise, and and as many will remember, made history. I was there just a little 10-year-old at Fieldston at the sit-in when he stood up for what was right. I’ve never forgotten that moment, just a little girl, feeling a sense of pride, a peaceful protest, that we could make a difference. John left me his Fieldston archive. His love of books, music, his tomato garden he tended to, movies he love to watch, and when I got diagnosed with a debilitating disease, he was generous and kind. I think most of all John love God. I’m so sorry for your loss Vivian, as he would call you “the Chairman”. Thank you for being such a good mother. I know he loves being a doctor, a father, a grandfather. My condolences to all of you. Godspeed.
