Daisy Chan Obituary

Published by Forest Lawn - Glendale on Nov. 15, 2022.
Daisy Chan passed away peacefully on November 15, 2022 at Huntington Hospital in Pasadena, CA at the age of 90. She will be remembered as a woman who was self-less, caring, passionate, and enterprising; devoted to her family, her church, her friends, and her community. Born in Phoenix, AZ, Daisy as a child growing up worked many hours in the family's grocery store while being diligent in her studies in elementary and high school. Her dedication to hard work, perseverance, and responsibility towards the family would help shape her life in the years to come. She graduated from high school as valedictorian of her class in 1950, graduated Magna Cum Laude from Arizona State University in 1954, and was active in college leadership, including president at Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority. Upon graduation, she went on to become an elementary school teacher in Phoenix. Daisy relocated to Los Angeles with her older sister Marie in 1956 to work as a teacher, and soon met the love of her life, Roy, at a church social. They later got married in 1957. She left teaching to raise her 4 children and support Roy's business, Chan & Yee Contractors. She returned to the workforce with the start up of East West Bank in 1973, where she established the Escrow Department and later rose to regional Vice President. Her faith in the Lord and serving the local church was always important to her. She was involved in different ministries and leadership roles at True Light Presbyterian Church and later with San Gabriel Presbyterian Church. She was a prominent leader and fellow sister to the many women in the Los Angeles Chinese Women's Club. After having multiple heart bypass surgeries in 1993 & 1999, she regularly attended the Cardiac Rehab Program at Huntington Hospital, and was thankful to God for giving her improved health to enjoy the life he had planned for her. In retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, getting the family together for Sunday dinners, and enjoyed catching up with longtime friends over lunch. She served faithfully at San Gabriel Presbyterian church - as a church leader, bible study leader, in women's ministry, and served with a loving and caring heart for others. Daisy and Roy liked to go camping at their Echo Lake property near Mt Shasta, and took many road trips together. She was an avid reader of many genres of books, and a big fan of all sports - watching and analyzing the Lakers, Rams, Dodgers, and UCLA games on television. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Roy; her brother, Richard (Pam) Yee; her sister, Jackie (Brian) Hing; her four children Jamie Chan, Garry (Marsha) Chan, Tammy (Tom) Chew, and Steven (Shirley) Chan; 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her sister, Marie Lou, and her brother, Wesley Yee. A private graveside service for the immediate family will be held at Forest Lawn Glendale in December. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Evergreen Baptist Church of San Gabriel Valley, 323 Workman Mill Road, La Puente, CA, on February 25, 2023 at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to San Gabriel Presbyterian Church - Daisy Chan Memorial Fund (200 W. Las Tunas Dr, San Gabriel, CA 91776) or to Huntington Hospital in Daisy Chan's name (www.giving.huntingtonhospital.com).

Memories abound. She was the mother of some of my best friends at church. Jamie, Garry, Tammy, and Steve--and Pedro. When my family was away, Mrs. Chan had me over for a holiday meal so I wouldn't be alone. I used her typewriter and had to work late. As she went to bed she just said to turn the lights off when I left. I left a note/Christmas card on her desk--I believe that it's still there. She loved me as one of her own children. I love her as a mother.

Daisy led a Bible study. She was organized and kind. She made copies of notes on colored paper and answers on different colored sheets. As time passed Roy and Phil Tom came and sat in a different room waiting to go to lunch with us ladies! Roy could fix anything from installing a bulletin board in a classroom to finding the one locksmith who could duplicate a gate padlock to open with the identical key as all the locks at church. Daisy and Roy were a faithful, dutiful, thrifty couple. They lived in a modest house. The bought used cars. They enjoyed a simple meal at Bun n’ Burger. May they enjoy being together forever.

It was with great sadness to hear of the passing of Roy and Daisy, the two icons of our small but very intimate group that covered both Los Angeles and later Orange Counties.
Roy was very special to us, as he was one of the groomsmen in our wedding in Tijuana in 1961. Later, when we bought our first house in Huntington Beach, it was Roy whom we chose to be our contractor to build an additional large family room to the house. Today, after a big renovation,(kitchen, bathrooms, etc) renters love “Roy’s big room.”
Daisy was a very special grand lady and my mentor. I have always “felt” her helping hand. We will never forget how surprised we were to see Daisy at Children’s Hospital early in the morning of our daughter’s heart surgery. Who does that? An angel from God.That’s just one example of the countless of thoughtful ways that showed how she cared. And that is who Daisy was.
Thank you both from our hearts, Bill and Rose

I first met Daisy in the 1970s, when I was introduced to a service organization called the Los Angeles Chinese Women's Club Juniors. By then, Daisy had "graduated" to the senior group, the Los Angeles Chinese Women's Club, where Daisy was a leader as well as a mentor to the Juniors. I always looked to Daisy with so much respect, as she was a role model for us younger Chinese American women. Daisy rose to the rank of vice-president of East West Bank - quite an accomplishment for a Chinese American woman in those days. A successful professional, wife, mother, woman of God, and community supporter. We could always turn to Daisy for advice, guidance, and support. She was our friend! I recall Daisy doing a cooking demonstration and helping to put together the cookbook, Gourmet Celestial, with other members of the Women´s Club. We would see Daisy and Roy at many community events as they continued to be active in the Chinatown community in their retirement years. Roy and Daisy will be missed, but their legacy lives on through their children, grandchildren, and the foundations they built in their church, community, and professional lives. Enjoy your heavenly rewards, Daisy and Roy.

We honor our dear Auntie Daisy, who has always been a dear and pivotal member of our Chan Clan. Her beaming smile & wit brought warmth and humor to our happy family occasions, and if there were ever a crisis she was the first to volunteer & offer her support. How lucky we are to have had her in our extended large family. We will never forget, and always be grateful for her generous nature & goodwill to others.

Prayers & Peace, as we count our blessings & feel her smiling down on us.

Much Love,
Mars & Campbell Collins, niece & nephew-in-law

A reflection of my mother: We both had similar hearts for others. Always thinking of others, reaching out and caring for their needs. Remembering their birthdays and sending out cards. Taking time to listen, pray and encourage them, as the Lord led us. This bible verse comes to my mind: "Because of our love for you, we were ready to share with you, not only the Good News from God, but even our own lives." (I Thessalonians 2:8)

We got to know Roy and Daisy in the 70s when Daisy worked at Cathay bank and Roy was the contractor for my Dad’s restaurant business. My parents loved Daisy when they did business at Cathay bank. Whenever they had a problem or needed something special, they would always go to Daisy. She was so patient and kind to them. In 1993 when we came to SGPC after my father passed away, I was nicely surprised to see Daisy and Roy, and we reconnected again. Daisy was welcoming with her kindness and loving ways, and she made us feel welcomed. We are glad to have known Daisy until her passing. Rest in peace our dear friend.

In 1964, when I was 5 years old, my birthmother, Marie, who was Auntie Daisy's older sister, went home to be with the Lord. Auntie Daisy and her family took me into their home for six months and cared for me, while Dad worked and searched for someone to look after me.
Two years later, when my stepmother Grace, arrived in the U.S. from Hong Kong, Auntie Daisy was there to join me and my dad in welcoming her to her new country.
Auntie Daisy and Uncle Roy were there for many of my graduations, but none more special than my graduation from seminary.
She and her whole family were there to celebrate Rosita's and my wedding and she and Uncle Roy have always supported us in our work as Wycliffe missionaries.
Words cannot express how full of joy Rosita and I are that Auntie Daisy is now in the presence of her Wonderful Savior and that she will someday be reunited with Grandma Yee, my mommy and Uncle Wes, in the New Jerusalem.

Unfortunately I only new Daisy a short time. But even recently, as her strength was failing, she was an impressive figure, kind and strong. And talking about her with others, I a picture emerged -- Daisy was a cornerstone, and a very significant leader at San Gabriel Presbyterian Church. We love you, Daisy, and will be long remembered. We thank God for you.

My deepest sympathy and prayers to Mr. Chan, Jamie, Garry, Tammy, Steve and entire Chan family. Daisy was a mentor to me, and encouraged me to serve as a Trustee at True Light. I enjoyed chatting numerous times, and remember our last conversation at the Chinese American WW2 commemoration banquet, where Mr. Chan was being honored. Much love to all!

Daisy and Roy were such solid pillars of all the churches that they were involved with. Her incredible wit and wisdom were legendary but it was her incredible faith in God that stood out the most. Heaven is a much funnier place with Daisy regaling God with hilarious stories in her typical self-deprecating humor. Daisy, we miss you. Thanks for your legacy of love and faith in our Lord.

I know Daisy Chan is missed. Though I never had the privilege of knowing her, I am missionary friends with her daughter, Jamie. I know that Daisy Chan raised a fine daughter who serves God with all her heart. Jamie, I am so sorry for your loss, but know you will embrace her, again.

My mother taught me many life lessons throughout my entire life from being respectful to others to the value of having a loving family. But its was the her faith in her heavenly father that was her true core that kept her strong and steadfast. She wanted all who knew her to experience that same relationship that she had with her Lord so that they may experience the same peace and happiness that she was blessed with.

My mom was the matriarch of our family. Her caring spirit, love of God and family, her sharp wit, the selfless giving of her sage wisdom, and love of sports has molded and influenced my life. Though I miss her dearly, I rejoice and take comfort knowing she is in heaven with her Heavenly Father. Thank you Mom for everything you’ve done for me and the family! I love you!
