Richard Dyjak Obituary

Published by Cremation Society of Connecticut - Windsor on Jan. 2, 2023.
Richard Paul Dyjak, 75, of Ellington, died peacefully at home on January 2, 2023, after fighting pancreatic cancer for nearly two years. He was the loving husband of Mary Lou (Grater) Dyjak. Richard was born on June 29, 1947, to the late Charles and Louise (Ciszek) Dyjak in Springfield, MA. He attended Cathedral High School in Springfield and went on to study at the University of Dayton in Dayton, OH, where he met his beloved wife, Mary Lou. They moved to Ellington in 1972, following his service in the U.S. Army. A lover of reading and knowledge, Richard had a keen wit and enjoyed debating any topic. He could talk with anyone and struck up conversations and friendships with everyone he met. He loved to tell stories about his daughters' soccer games, remembering specific plays and reveling in the memory of past victories. He delighted in sharing stories about his own youthful exploits and lessons learned. Most of all, he just loved being with his family. He loved his wife and looked forward to cheering on the UConn women's basketball team or sharing a swim and a good meal with her. He was a constant presence in his grandchildren's lives supporting them at their athletic events, celebrating their academic achievements and enjoying their everyday successes. He was an emotional support to his daughters, never failing to step in with practical help and meaningful guidance. Among his many contributions to his community, his most beloved was coaching youth soccer. Whether coaching recreational, premier, or high school teams, he was a consummate coach who could always see the potential for excellence. His volunteerism and hard work benefitted hundreds of youths in Ellington. In addition to his wife of 54 years, Mary Lou, he is survived by his three daughters; Anne Kane of Cold Spring, NY, Lauren Mas and husband Greg of Enfield, Sarah Lundin and husband Mark of Granby; grandchildren, Olivia, Ethan, Piper, Charlotte and Aidan; brothers, Leon Dyjak and wife Ann of Orono, ME, Thomas Dyjak and wife Audrey of Ludlow, MA; brother-in-law Warren Talsma of Keller, TX; sister-in-law Marcia Binegar and husband Gary of Cincinnati, OH. He is also leaves behind his nieces and nephews and many other beloved family members and friends. A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 28, 2023 at 10:00am at the Church of St. Luke ,141 Maple St., Ellington, CT. Knew Richie from long ago. 2 memories I have that I vividly remember. Brother Tom reading me a letter from Richie when Richie was in the army on the porch of the Indian orchard house...and Richie driving up
From Connecticut to play
basketball with the guys in the Orchard...Richie rocked that headband and glasses while he played guard...RIP, Richie, condolences to the family...

Dear Lauren and family,
I was deeply saddened, having recently learned of your father's passing. Living in South Carolina these past 15 years, we seldom are aware of the news from up North. It has been many years that we last spoke, but both of you have been in our thoughts. You both were an important part of our daughter Lindsey's high school years. His support during her two ACL surgeries will never be forgotten. He was truly a blessing to all who knew him. Beyond the sidelines, he was not only an exceptional coach, mentor, and supporter... but a friend to all. Our thoughts are with you.

Sarah and Family,

I met Coach the first year I started playing soccer and I absolutely adored him! He was a mentor and advocate and I feel blessed to have had him in my corner. A true champion of women´s soccer - his love for the "beautiful game" was infectious! He was a great guy and had such a positive impact on so many young athletes. My sincere condolences.

We all remember Rich and his coaching prowess in Ellington...but a nice man who loved his family is where he shined. I first encountered the Dyjaks when Ann was a student in my math class. We last saw him at Bob Tedford´s funeral....still positive and updating us on his family! You have our sincere condolences... take care

To the Dyjak family:
We were very sorry to hear about Rich's passing. He was a great guy who loved sports, as evidenced by all the time he devoted to coaching. He coached our daughter in her early years playing soccer, and was always helpful and positive in teaching her and all of the kids on his team. I'm sure that he will be greatly missed by all. May he rest in peace.

I worked with Coach at Allied for about 18 years. He was crazy about his wife and family and often spoke warmly about you all. He could be hilariously funny and was brilliant with the one-liners. He was loved by all. I am sorry for your loss.
