Joseph Caputo Obituary
Born in Dunmore, son of the late Joseph J. and Angela Gaetano Caputo, he was a graduate of Dunmore High School class of 1952, and went on to the University of Scranton, and then Lehigh University, where he obtained his master's degree in education. He began his career as a science teacher at Scranton Central High School and later became principal at East Scranton Intermediate School, from where he retired in 1993. Throughout his 37 years as an educator, he left an indelible impression on those he taught that lasts with them still today. He was a member of SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish in Dunmore where he attended daily Mass, as well as its choir and Holy Name Society. He was very passionate and active in the Pennsylvanians for Human Life. Also, for more than 60 years, he had been a member of the Greater Scranton YMCA.
Joseph was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved his family very much. His love and passion for music allowed him to please and honor many people over the years with the parodies he wrote and sang for them on special occasions. He enjoyed his poker club, and visiting Atlantic City and Mohegan Sun with his children. He will be deeply missed.
Surviving are daughters, Angela Giello and husband, Dan, of Dunmore; and Mary Vincent and husband, Kevin, of Jefferson Twp.; and sons, Joseph M. and wife, Kathleen, of Covington Twp.; and Christopher P. and wife, Christina, of Roaring Brook Twp.; grandchildren, Deanna Giello, Jessica Giello, Gianna Caputo, Donato Caputo, Matthew Caputo, Mark Caputo, Chloe Caputo and Kevin Vincent Jr.; as well as nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was also preceded in death by a son, Matthew J. Caputo.
The funeral will be Thursday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church, Smith Street, Dunmore. Interment to follow in St. Catherine's Cemetery, Moscow.
Friends may call Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Elizabeth G. "Betty" Caputo Memorial Scholarship Fund at the University of Scranton, c/o the Royal Fund Office at O'Hara Hall, Scranton, PA 18510.

Mr. Caputo was my middle school principal at East Scranton Intermediate School back in the '80s. My friends and I were a little out of control, to say the least. Whenever we were called into his office, he always gave us the tough love we needed. Years later, I ran into him and when I told him I had recently got my degree in teaching, he smiled to himself. I could tell that he was proud that I was able to turn things around from being such a handful back in the day. I'm glad I was able to thank him in person for keeping tabs on me. Mr. Caputo, I'd like to thank you one last time, and may you rest in peace. You were a great role model. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family.

My sincere condolences to the Caputo family. Mr. Caputo was my 9th grade Science teacher at Scranton Central HS. He always maintained an in-class environment conducive to learning. I had many conversations with him at the YMCA after he retired from his educational career. He was a person of integrity, possessed a brilliant intellect, and was a truly compassionate man. Rest in peace, Mr. Caputo.

He was a great man. He was the principal at EAST JR HIGH, when I was going there got sent to him once that's all it took. I also used to clean the house . Always so sweet and generous. Prayers going out to the family.

My condolences to the Caputo family. I had Mr. Caputo my freshman year at Central HS. My mother worked as his secretary for several years and he was even a guest at my wedding back in 1977. He was a wonderful man and will be missed.
