Alexandra Paul’s legacy
Alexandra Paul had early success in ice dancing and figure skating, finishing third in the 2009 Canadian Championships. However, she felt she needed a new ice dancing partner to achieve greater success. After meeting Mitchell Islam that same year, the pair began competing together and would remain partners for the rest of their skating days. First, they skated in Europe on the Junior Grand Prix circuit, then won gold at Canadian Junior Championships and silver at the Junior Worlds.
They then won bronze in the 2013 Nebelhorn Trophy and made the Canadian Olympic team, competing in the 2014 games and finishing 18th. Two years later, they won a bronze at the CS U.S. International Classic. However, repeated injuries began to take their toll and the pair – now a couple – retired from competition. They left the sport as three-time Canadian national bronze medalists.
After retiring from skating, Paul attended Oakland University and the University of Windsor, where she earned her law degree. She became a practicing attorney in 2021. She and Islam married in 2021, and they had a son, Charles in late 2022.
