Andrew Prine (1936–2022), prolific character actor who starred in Westerns

Andrew Prine was a character actor especially known for Westerns, including the TV show “Wide Country” and the John Wayne (1907–1979) film “Chisum.”

Acting career

One of Prine’s earliest roles was on Broadway, starring in “Look Homeward, Angel” as Eugene Gant. He took over the role from Anthony Perkins (1932–1992), who originated it. Prine went on to a very busy career in movies and TV shows, with his early movies including “The Miracle Worker,” “The Devil’s Brigade,” and “Chisum.” He starred in the 1962 Western TV series “Wide Country” as well as making many other appearances on Westerns including “Have Gun – Will Travel,” “Gunsmoke,” “Bonanza,” and “The Virginian.” In 2001, he was honored with a Golden Boot Award for his years of work in Westerns. He also appeared in a number of horror movies, including “Simon, King of the Witches,” “Nightmare Circus,” “Amityville II: The Possession,” and “Grizzly.” Prine starred on TV in the miniseries “V” and its sequel “V: The Final Battle” as the “visitor” Stephen, and he had a recurring role on the TV series adaptation of “Weird Science” as Wyatt’s dad. His many other TV appearances included “The F.B.I.,” “Kolchak: The Night Stalker,” “Hawaii Five-O,” “Murder, She Wrote,” “Married… With Children,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” and “Melrose Place.”
