Anthony “Baby Gap” Walker (1963–2024), member of the Gap Band

by Linnea Crowther

Anthony “Baby Gap” Walker was a songwriter, rapper, dancer, and choreographer with the Gap Band.

Anthony “Baby Gap” Walker’s legacy

Walker joined the Gap Band in the early 1980s, more than a decade after their formation but just as they were beginning to achieve major success. He was a nephew of founding members the Wilson brothers. The band’s biggest hit came in 1982 with “You Dropped a Bomb on Me.” Walker contributed to songwriting and choreographed the band’s high-energy live shows. He danced and acted as hype man, and he rapped and sang backing vocals.

Walker remained with the Gap Band for 23 years, staying on after founding member Charlie Wilson left for a solo career. Walker and Wilson also collaborated, along with Gap Band keyboardist Billy Young, on the 1985 album “Billy and Baby Gap.” He also performed with such artists as Rick James (1948–2004) and George Clinton.
