Biff Rose’s legacy
Rose first came to prominence in New York City’s Greenwich Village folk scene in the 1960s. Born Paul Rose in New Orleans, he shaped his music around that folk aesthetic, beginning with his 1968 debut album, “The Thorn in Mrs. Rose’s Side.” It included perhaps his best-known song, “Fill Your Heart,” which was covered first by Tiny Tim as the B-side to his hit single “Tiptoe Through the Tulips” and then by Bowie for his album “Hunky Dory.”
Rose would go on to release albums throughout the 1970s, and his music continued to be covered by notable artists. His song “Molly” was recorded by John Denver (1943–1997) and Pat Boone, who also covered his “What’s Gnawing at Me.” Rose performed his music on such TV shows as “The Tonight Show,” “American Bandstand,” and “The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour.”
In later years, Rose founded Mythological Records. He recorded several albums with singer Jesse Gallagher.
Notable quote
“Just remember lovers never lose
‘Cause they are free of thoughts unpure
And of thoughts unkind
Gentleness clears the soul
Love cleans the mind
And makes it free” —from “Fill Your Heart
