Billy Kametz (1987–2022), “Attack on Titan,” “Pokémon Journeys” voice actor

by Linnea Crowther

Billy Kametz was a voice actor known for his performances in anime including “Attack on Titan,” “Pokémon Journeys,” and “The Rising of the Shield Hero.”

Acting career

Kametz settled in California in 2016 and quickly established himself as a voice actor. His early roles included the video game “Marvel Avengers Academy” and the anime series “Sword Gai” and “JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable.” In 2019, he provided the voice of Naofumi Iwatani in season one of “The Rising of the Shield Hero,” winning a Crunchyroll Anime Award for Best Voice Actor Performance. Kametz had a busy career for the rest of his life, with anime roles including Ren in “Pokémon Journeys,” Niccolo in “Attack on Titan,” and Metal Lee in “Boruto.” He also continued to provide voices for video games, including “Brawl Stars,” “Pokémon Masters,” “Persona 5 Royal,” and the upcoming “Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes.”

Kametz on voicing anime vs. video games

“I find that anime is easier for me; again, neither of them are easier, but with anime, you can hear the music, you can see the picture, you can hear what the Japanese voice actor is doing, and it immediately puts you in character of ‘okay, this is what I’m gonna do!’ …But with video games, it’s a lot more work on your end; you need to make up exactly what’s going on in the scene, and again, you’ll have the director and the clients are there to kinda help you along, but you gotta really do more work of getting pictures in your head of ‘This is how far away I am from the person,’ and ‘This is the tone that’s going on right now.’” —from a 2020 interview for Crunchyroll
