Cass Warner (1948–2024), granddaughter of Warner Bros. co-founder

by Eric San Juan

Cass Warner was a filmmaker, author, the granddaughter of Warner Bros. co-founder Harry Warner, and mother of actor Cole Hauser.

Cass Warner’s legacy

In some ways, Warner was born into entertainment royalty. Her grandfather was Harry Warner, one of the co-founders of Warner Bros., and as a child she sat in on story meetings with her father, Milton Warner. This bond she felt with both her family and the Warner legacy led to her co-authoring “Hollywood Be Thy Name: The Warner Brothers Story” in 1993 with her father and Jack Warner Jr.

“Hollywood Be Thy Name” was re-titled “The Brothers Warner” when, in 2007, she directed a documentary adaptation of the book under that title for the American Masters series on PBS. She later formed the production company Warner Sisters and produced the 2012 documentary, “Hopper: In His Own Words,” about actor Dennis Hopper. Via Warner Sisters, she also produced interviews with other such notable figures in entertainment as Matthew McConaughey, Chick Corea, and others.

Warner was a mother of four, including “Yellowstone” actor Cole Hauser.

On making a film about her family’s legacy:

“It’s been a most personal journey full of deep understandings of the inner workings of my family–their trials and tribulations, their personalities and philosophies; and why they created the films they did … They gambled everything many times to make their dream a reality. This was truly amazing to me.”—from an August 2008 interview for NPR American Masters
