Clark Haggans (1977–2023), former Steelers linebacker

by Eric San Juan

Clark Haggans was an NFL linebacker who helped lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to victory against the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XL.

Clark Haggans’ legacy

Born in Torrance, California, Haggans was a star athlete at Colorado State University, becoming the school’s all-time sack leader and being inducted into the Colorado State University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015. He was drafted by the Steelers in 2000 and by 2004 had earned his place as a regular starter.

In 2005, he had nine sacks during the regular season, then went on to help lead the team to victory in Super Bowl XL, with the second most tackles on the team in the game. After eight years with the Steelers, he signed with the Arizona Cardinals, where he played for four years. He finished his career in 2012 with the San Francisco 49ers, with whom he played in his second Super Bowl. All told, he racked up a career total of 520 tackles and 46 sacks.

Off the field, Haggans devoted himself to charity, becoming an early supporter of the Black Out Child Abuse Campaign.
