by Kirk Fox

Danny Kalb was a guitarist and vocalist who was an original member of the influential blues band the Blues Project.

The Blues Project

Danny Kalb made his name as a guitarist in the Greenwich Village blues and folk scene of the early 1960s. He told AM New York in 2013 that he dropped out of college at the University of Wisconsin after spending time with Bob Dylan and made his way to New York City to be a musician. He was a protégé of Greenwich Village legend Dave Van Ronk and played guitar on Phil Ochs 1964 debut album “All the News That’s Fit to Sing.” In 1965, Kalb started the Blues Project that featured Al Kooper and Steve Katz. He played guitar and was a vocalist with the group and they were known for injecting rock into traditional blues. They released a live album “Live at the Café Au Go Go,” in 1965 which was the club they often played in New York City. The band was active for a few years and then fell apart with Kooper and Katz going on to form Blood, Sweat and Tears. Kalb released a solo album and played live shows until around 2012.
