Hard Punching Heavyweight
Earnie Shavers was a top heavyweight boxer who had a long career in the ring. He was active from 1969 until 1995 but he was at his peak in the 1970s. Shavers was a prolific hard punching heavyweight who had an incredible 68 knockouts in his career. He fought Muhammad Ali for the heavyweight title in 1977 at Madison Square Garden, losing to the legendary Ali in a 15-round decision. After the fight, Ali talked about how hard Shavers hit him in the bout. In 1979, he fought Larry Holmes for the title and was stopped in the 11th round. He had notable wins against Ken Norton, Jimmy Ellis and Jimmy Young. He came back to fight in 1995 in his 50s and retired for good after losing that bout to Brian Yates. Shavers was a popular guest at boxing events.
