Elizabeth Hubbard’s legacy
Elizabeth Hubbard was widely known in the soap opera world, both starting and ending her career there. Her first major role was on “Guiding Light” in 1962, playing Anne Fletcher in an arc lasting several months. She went on to a regular role on “The Edge of Night” in 1963 before landing her first longtime soap opera gig on “The Doctors.” There, she played Dr. Althea Davis for much of the show’s run, beginning in 1964 and continuing, with a few breaks, until 1982. She won a Daytime Emmy Award in 1974 for her work on “The Doctors.”
Shortly after “The Doctors” ended, Hubbard joined “One Life to Live” as Estelle Chadwick. She then moved on to her other long-term role, playing the wealthy businesswoman Lucinda Walsh on “As the World Turns.” Hubbard starred in the soap opera from 1984 until the show took its final bow in 2010, and over the course of her run was nominated for eight Daytime Emmy Awards and several Soap Opera Digest Awards for the role. Her final appearance was on the internet soap opera “Anacostia,” playing Eva Montgomery from 2015 to 2018. Hubbard also appeared on TV shows including “The Virginian,” “Marcus Welby, M.D.,” and “Law & Order.”
Notable quote
“[P]eople need something that takes you into a different world, which is what the soaps have always done so beautifully. I’ve been so lucky playing Lucinda – a character who could do anything. She could lie, break the law, she didn’t have to be good, and she always had that checkbook ready. Always!” —from a 2010 interview for TV Guide
