Estelle Harris (1928–2022), actress known for “Seinfeld” role

by Linnea Crowther

Estelle Harris was an actress best known for playing Estelle Costanza, George’s mother, on “Seinfeld” from 1992 to 1998.

TV and movies

Playing opposite Jerry Stiller (1927–2020) as her “Seinfeld” husband, Harris created a screechy, overbearing mother who raised a neurotic son in George. Also on TV, she played Muriel on “The Suite Life of Zack & Cody.” Harris also had notable roles as a voice actress, including Mrs. Potato Head in the “Toy Story” series, Mama Gunda in “Tarzan II,” and Mama Lipsky on “Kim Possible.” Her movies include “Stand and Deliver” (1988), “My Giant” (1998), and “CBGB” (2013). On TV, she made appearances on dozens of shows, including “Law & Order,” “Star Trek: Voyager,” ”ER,” and “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

Commercials

Early in Harris’ acting career, she got work in commercials – her commercial spots in the 1980s had her singing the Handi-Wrap jingle, admitting to her late mother that she used SOS Pads instead of Brillo, and admiring a Cabbage Patch Kid’s fur coat. Later in life, she promoted Iams pet food.

“I have fond memories. I think that the show was the best sitcom ever, and still is.” —from a 2012 interview with KiSS 92.5
