George R. Robertson (1933–2023), Police Academy’s Chief Hurst

George R. Robertson was an actor best known for playing Chief/Commissioner Henry Hurst in the first six “Police Academy” movies.

Acting career

Robertson’s most prominent role was in the “Police Academy” movies. Chief of police in the first two movies and promoted to commissioner for the third, his character of Henry Hurst was initially intolerant and resistant to the academy’s new recruits, especially any women, but he became a friendlier character over the course of the series. Robertson also had small roles in movies including “Rosemary’s Baby,” “Airport,” “Norma Rae,” “JFK,” and “National Lampoon’s Senior Trip.” On TV, he appeared in a 1989 episode of “The Twilight Zone” and played Vice President Dick Cheney in the miniseries “The Path to 9/11,” among other roles in TV movies and series. A native of Canada, Robertson was a UNICEF ambassador who was honored with the Danny Kaye UNICEF Canada Award in 1990.
