Hage Geingob’s legacy
Geingob began his political career as a young man, when Namibia was called South West Africa and was still under the rule of South Africa. When the country gained its independence in 1990, he helped craft the new constitution and became Namibia’s first prime minister, serving through 2002. After spending several years as executive secretary of the Global Coalition for Africa, he returned to political life, serving in Namibia’s parliament and in a leadership position in his political party, the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO).
In 2012, Geingob was appointed prime minister again, serving until his election as president in 2015. Elected by an overwhelming margin, Geingob served two terms and had intended to step down and pass the torch to another candidate for this year’s election. During his presidency, Geingob helped Namibia maintain good relationships with many other countries, including the United States. He worked to bring more women into government roles and reduce gender-based violence.
