Helen Washington (1944–2023), dancer with Isaac Hayes

by Linnea Crowther

Helen Washington was a dancer known for her shaved head and her iconic work with Isaac Hayes (1942–2008) on tour and in memorable photos.

A Stax Records legend

After a difficult early life that included time in prison, Washington began working with Hayes in the late 1960s. She originally worked on wardrobe for his stage show. However, she became an integral part of that show when she shaved her head and began dancing alongside Hayes. Washington and Hayes were photographed together for a 1972 Ebony magazine cover photo that accompanied a story about the dancer. In it, her dancing was described as enchanting. Also a songwriter, Washington co-wrote songs for Stax Records artists including “I’m Afraid of Losing You,” performed by the Mad Lads. She remained with Stax and Hayes until the label’s closure in the mid-1970s, later working as a dance instructor.
