James McCaffrey’s legacy
McCaffrey made a lasting impression on pop culture as the voice of cutting-edge video game character Max Payne, but his legacy as an actor stretches across dozens of film and television roles, too. His first prominent role was in “New York Undercover,” which was quickly followed by a 34-episode run as the lead actor on the action thriller show “Viper.” He also had stints on “Swift Justice” and “As the World Turns.”
McCaffrey’s mainstream breakout performance came in 2004, when he was cast as deceased firefighter Jimmy Keefe on “Rescue Me.” He played a main role on the show, appearing in 55 episodes. Around the same time, McCaffrey cemented another part of his legacy in 2001, when he took on voice acting work for a story-driven video game called “Max Payne.” The game ended up being highly influential, spawning multiple sequels and making his voice recognizable to fans throughout the world.
Other career highlights include appearances in the films “The Truth About Cats & Dogs” and “American Splendor,” as well as roles on such television shows as “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Sex and the City,” and “Jessica Jones,” and voice acting for the video games “Alan Wake 2” and “Control.”
