Jim Otto (1938–2024), Hall of Fame center with the Raiders

by Eric San Juan

Jim Otto was an NFL Hall of Fame center who played for 15 years and 210 straight games with the Oakland Raiders.

Jim Otto’s legacy

Wisconsin-born Jim Otto was a star athlete at the University of Miami, where he played center and linebacker. However, at six-foot-two and not particularly heavy, Otto was considered by some teams to be small for his position, so he garnered little interest from NFL teams. Instead, he was drafted into the AFL, landing with the Raiders. Otto was with the squad from its inception, and he ended up playing in the team’s first 210 games in a row.

Otto was a fixture for the Raiders, never missing a game due to injury and being on board when the team transitioned from the AFL to the NFL. He played in six AFL/AFC championships with the team, winning one, and was one of just 20 players to compete in every season of the AFL.

Otto was a 12-time Pro Bowl player who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980, his very first year of eligibility. He also joined the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame & Museum in 1972. In addition, in 2019, Otto was among those named to the National Football League 100th Anniversary All-Time Team.
