Acting career
Barnes began her acting career in the 1950s, with many TV appearances including “Maverick,” “Cheyenne,” and “Hawaiian Eye,” as well as a recurring role in “21 Beacon Street.” Her early movies included “Auntie Mame,” in which she played the wealthy and spoiled Gloria Upson, and 1959’s “Tarzen, the Ape Man,” playing Jane opposite Denny Miller’s Tarzan. She had a small role in “Spartacus” before being cast in the Disney live action classic “The Parent Trap.” Barnes played Vicky Robinson, the gold-digging fiancée of twins Sharon and Susan’s father. In a clever casting move, Barnes returned to the remake of “The Parent Trap,” 37 years later, to play Vicky Blake, the mother of the character she played in the original film. In between, she made many other TV appearances, including “The Beverly Hillbillies,” “Hawaii Five-O,” “Fantasy Island,” “Murder, She Wrote,” and “Cheers.” Barnes was also the author of several novels, as well as the writer of the syndicated newspaper column “Touching Home.”
