John Regan (1951–2023), bassist for Peter Frampton

by Eric San Juan

John Regan was a bass player who recorded and toured alongside Peter Frampton, Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones, and Ace Frehley.

John Regan’s legacy

John Regan’s musical legacy began in 1979, when he met Peter Frampton. Frampton was fresh off a string of successes, including 1976’s landmark live album, “Frampton Comes Alive!,” and found a musical connection with Regan. Regan would play bass on Frampton’s next three records, “Rise Up,” “Breaking All the Rules,” and “The Art of Control,” as well as the 1995 live album, “Frampton Comes Alive! II.” He also became Frampton’s regular touring bassist.

When not playing with Frampton, Regan was contributing to work by other musicians. He partnered with former KISS guitarist Ace Frehley for a string of the artist’s solo albums, including “Frehley’s Comet,” “Second Sighting,” and “Trouble Walkin’.” He also toured extensively with Frehley throughout the 1980s.

Regan joined Mick Jagger and David Bowie (1947–2016) for the recording of their 1985 single, “Dancing in the Streets,” and appeared in The Rolling Stones’ 1986 album, “Dirty Work.” He also played with artists such as Billy Idol, David Lee Roth, and Bonnie Tyler. Regan continued to tour with Frampton until 2011 – in the years that followed, he continued to make guest appearances at various Frampton shows. In 2016, he formed the band Four By Fate.
