Julián Figueroa (1995–2023), Mexican ballad singer

by Eric San Juan

Julián Figueroa was a Mexican ballad singer known for songs like “Yo sería,” “Ay amor,” and “Volaré.”

Julián Figueroa’s legacy

Julián Figueroa followed in the footsteps of his father, singer Joan Sebastian (1951–2015), making a career of performing stirring ballads to a traditional backing band. Figueroa’s move into entertainment came naturally, with both his father and his mother, actress Maribel Guardia, having successful careers.

Sebastian was known for sentimental love songs, and Figueroa’s own string of hits was similar. They include “Yo sería,” “Ay amor,” and “Volaré,” drawn from a career spanning four full-length albums. He was also an actor, starring in telenovelas such as “Mi camino es amarte.” Figueroa was still mourning the death of his father, who passed in 2015; his final Instagram post was a tribute to Sebastian.

Figueroa died of acute myocardial infarction – a heart attack – and ventricular fibrillation, which is an irregular heartbeat. He leaves behind his wife, Imelda Garza Tuñón, and a 6-year-old son, José Julián Figueroa.
