Jazz Legend

Konitz was an alto saxophonist who started out playing bebop jazz in the 1940s. He was a pioneer of the cool jazz movement and an incredible improviser who was a featured player on Miles Davis’s seminal 1957 album “Birth of the Cool.” The album which also featured Gerry Mulligan, showcased the emerging style which used classical music ideas in a style more relaxed than bebop. Though his star faded in the United States, he remained an important figure for Jazz fans in Europe and continued to perform live until recently.
