Masashi Ozawa’s legacy

Ozawa began wrestling in his home country of Japan, coming to the U.S. in the late 1970s. One of his first notable U.S. matches was against André “André the Giant” Roussimoff (1946–1993), and the two would feud during Ozawa’s early days in the WWE in 1980 and 1981. In one legendary match, Ozawa was said to have broken Roussimoff’s ankle. In fact, the break had happened earlier at home, and it was written into the match as a cover story so Roussimoff could take time off from wrestling. Ozawa also became known for his “Asian Mist” defense, in which he would spit a supposedly poisonous liquid into his opponent’s face.

Later in his WWE career, Ozawa wrestled Hulk Hogan and had a feud with Outback Jack. He retired from wrestling soon after that, returning to Japan, where he ran restaurants and bars in Tokyo. He had a role in the 1994 movie “3 Ninjas Kick Back.”
