Paul Cattermole (1977–2023), S Club 7 singer

by Linnea Crowther

Paul Cattermole was a singer with the British pop group S Club 7, known for hits including “Never Had a Dream Come True.”

Paul Cattermole’s legacy

Paul Cattermole was selected for S Club 7 from over 10,000 people who auditioned for the group, created by impresario Simon Fuller. Formed in 1998, the group first came to prominence in their TV show, “Miami 7,” marketed in the U.S. as “S Club 7 in Miami.” Called “The Monkees for the next generation,” the TV show helped launch S Club 7’s musical stardom, with the show’s theme song “Bring it All Back” becoming their first single.  The song was a No. 1 hit in the U.K., charting across Europe and in Australia as well. S Club 7 also hit No. 1 in the U.K. with “Never Had a Dream Come True,” “Don’t Stop Movin’,” and “Have You Ever.” “Never Had a Dream Come True” was their most popular hit in the U.S., reaching No. 10.

In 2002, Cattermole left S Club 7 to return to a musical style he had sung before joining the group, reforming his metal band from school, Skua. He toured and recorded with Skua off and on, and he rejoined some of his former band members to form S Club 3. In later years, Cattermole spoke out about the unhappiness he had experienced while part of S Club 7. However, he had agreed to tour with S Club 7 in a full reunion later in 2023.

Notable quote

“We were closer than many pop groups – people that used to work with us said: ‘Wow, you guys actually speak, you actually stay in the same room.’ Most of them don’t.” —from a 2019 interview for the Guardian
