Pete Carril (1930–2022), legendary former Princeton basketball coach

by Kirk Fox

Pete Carril was the head basketball coach at Princeton University for 30 years, leading them to 11 NCAA tournament appearances.

College Basketball Legend

Pete Carril coached one year at Lehigh University before moving on to a 30-year tenure as the head basketball coach at Princeton University in the Ivy League. Though the Ivy League Conference was not a basketball powerhouse, he led the Tigers to 11 NCAA tournament appearances. Carill’s teams were known for their defense and an old-fashioned clock draining “Princeton Offense” that used backdoor cuts and precise passing to frustrate more athletic opponents. In 1989, his team beat number one seed Georgetown and Alonzo Mourning in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. During his last season in 1996, the Tigers did it again, upsetting defending champion UCLA in the first round. Carill was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame the year after he retired.

Notable Quote

“Anybody can coach basketball. I can tell you that right now. It’s not that hard to know about a pick-and-roll, a back-pick, the shuffle-cut, I mean, it’s not that hard.” “But what is hard is to see how to develop something, to have an idea how your team is going to play. And that comes under the header of thinking.” – He said after he retired, according to ESPN.
