Acting career
Allen got her start as a stage actress, earning a Tony Award nomination when she originated the role of reporter Gloria Thorpe in “Damn Yankees” on Broadway. She reprised the role in the 1958 film adaptation, singing “Shoeless Joe from Hannibal, Mo.” in both. Allen also appeared on Broadway in “The Pajama Game,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” and “And Miss Reardon Drinks a Little,” for which she won a Tony for Best Supporting Actress. She had recurring TV roles in “All in the Family” and “Soap,” as well as her memorable turn in “The Sopranos” as Quintina Blundetto, aunt of James Gandolfini’s (1961–2013) character, Tony Soprano. Allen made many other TV appearances, including “Hill Street Blues,” “Seinfeld,” “NYPD Blue,” and “Grey’s Anatomy.” In the 1992 film “A League of Their Own,” she played the mother of Lori Petty’s character, Kit Keller; her other movies include “Stargate” and “Reign Over Me.”
