Legendary Punter
Ray Guy was considered by many to be the greatest punter in NFL history. He was an All-American at Southern Mississippi University and was the first ever punter to be drafted in the first round when the Oakland Raiders took him with the 23rd pick in the 1973 NFL draft. He played all 14 of his NFL seasons with the Oakland and Los Angeles Raiders, winning three Super Bowls. He was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and finished with a career punting average of over 42 yards. Rare for a punter, he was an outstanding athlete, excelling in football, basketball, and baseball and was drafted four times by Major League Baseball teams. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame and is the only primary punter to receive the honor.
Notable Quote
“I was a good athlete and could have been a Major League pitcher or an NBA basketball player, but I knew God had something special for me.” “And eventually one sport would stand out beyond the rest, and it did. Playing in the NFL with the Raiders was my destiny, and I never looked back or questioned my decision.” – He said in his Hall of Fame induction speech in 2014
