Ron “Patch” Hamilton (1950–2023), Patch the Pirate singer and songwriter

by Linnea Crowther

Ron “Patch” Hamilton was a singer and songwriter who created the “Patch the Pirate” series of Christian recordings for children.

Ron “Patch” Hamilton’s legacy

Hamilton studied church music at Bob Jones University. He found a focus for his musical knowledge as a young man after losing his left eye to cancer. Embracing the fact that his eye patch made children think of a pirate, Hamilton began writing Christian songs and stories for children as Patch the Pirate. His family joined in, performing characters alongside him. They released dozens of albums, from their 1981 debut, “Sing Along with Patch the Pirate,” to their most recent release, 2021’s “Whale of a Tale.” Hamilton’s adventures as Patch the Pirate were broadcast on radio stations worldwide, and they were turned into animated videos. He also served as music pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Simpsonville, South Carolina, and he and his family ran the record label Majesty Music.
