Sergio Calderón (1945–2023), actor known for quirky roles

by Eric San Juan

Sergio Calderón was a Mexican character actor known for quirky roles in films like “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” and “Men in Black,” where he played “the head on a stick.”

Sergio Calderón’s legacy

After studying at Instituto Andrés Soler of the Asociación Nacional de Actores in Mexico, Calderón landed his first film role in 1970, performing alongside John Huston in “The Bridge in the Jungle.” Calderón would pair up with Huston again over a decade later for “Under the Volcano,” where he played a murderous local leader. In between those roles, he appeared in a slew of Mexican films and television shows, including “Canoa: A Shameful Memory,” “Mecánica nacional,” and the Mexican American drama “The Children of Sanchez” with Anthony Quinn.

Calderón is perhaps best known for his quirky roles in fan favorites “Men in Black” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End.” In the former, he played a literal head on a stick, a disguise being used by an alien trying to go undetected. In the latter, he played Captain Eduardo Villanueva of the Adriatic Sea, one of the film’s pirate lords.

Calderón also had roles in Sergio Leone’s “Duck, You Sucker!” (also known as “A Fistful of Dynamite”), and he played two different villains on television’s “The A-Team,” including a star turn as the bandit Malavida Valdése in the show’s debut episode. He was also in 2010’s “Little Fockers.”
