Shirley Anne Field’s legacy
Field worked as a model and had several small roles in British cinema before getting her breakout role in 1960’s “The Entertainer.” She credited director Tony Richardson (1928–1991) with her big break, and she worked with him again in “Saturday Night and Sunday morning,” which he produced. She starred opposite Albert Finney (1936–2019) in the acclaimed kitchen sink drama.
Field went on to star in the Hammer horror film “The Damned” and the historical epic “Kings of the Sun.” In 1966, she had a supporting role in the Michael Caine classic “Alfie.” Later in her film career, she appeared in the popular film “My Beautiful Laundrette” as well as in “Getting it Right,” “Shag,” and “The Kid.”
In addition to her celebrated career on the big screen, Field had an active TV career. On “Santa Barbara,” she was the first to play Pamela Pepperidge Conrad, appearing on the show for several months before being replaced by Marj Dusay (1936–2020). Her other appearances on British and American TV included “Last of the Summer Wine,” “Where the Heart Is,” “Monarch of the Glen,” “Doctors,” and “Murder, She Wrote.”

“[W]e all learned from each other. I don’t think that I would have been as good as people think I was if I had had too much training. I think I wouldn’t have had the naturalness for film.” —from a 2009 interview for Den of Geek
