Tamayo Perry’s legacy
Perry became a Hawaii surfing legend on the strength of his success surfing the Banzai Pipeline, Oahu’s famously challenging surf reef break. He surfed professionally for decades where he’d been born and raised, teaching surfing with Oahu Surfing Experience, and working as a lifeguard. In addition to frequently surfing at Pipeline, he also mastered the famously challenging surfing location of Teahupoo in Tahiti.
Perry’s acting experience began with the 2002 surfing movie “Blue Crush.” He went on to appear in “Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle” and played a buccaneer in “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.” On TV, he appeared in episodes of “Hawaii Five-0” and “Lost.”
Notable quote
“The interesting thing I’ve discovered throughout the 26 years surfing Pipeline is that from my very first real and absolutely exhilarating tube ride at the Banzai, all the way up to this last Valentine’s Day, where Pipe went off its head, if you catch a solid one at Pipeline, you don’t remember much. I can honestly say that I can’t remember three-fourths of my best tube rides. And with that being said, I truly believe that’s where the addiction of Pipeline lies.” – from a 2016 interview for The Surfer’s View
