Tim Bachman (1951–2023), Bachman-Turner Overdrive founding guitarist

by Linnea Crowther

Tim Bachman was a guitarist who co-founded the Canadian rock band Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO).

Tim Bachman’s legacy

Bachman got his start playing in Brave Belt along with his brothers, Randy Bachman and Robbie Bachman (1953–2023). Brave Belt morphed into Bachman-Turner Overdrive in 1973, after the addition of Fred Turner. The band found widespread success with their second album, “Bachman-Turner Overdrive II,” featuring the hit singles “Let It Ride” and “Takin’ Care of Business.” Bachman co-wrote the songs “Blown” and “I Don’t Have to Hide” for that album, and he sang lead vocals on both.

Bachman left Bachman-Turner Overdrive in 1974, before they recorded their chart-topping third album, but he rejoined the band for reunion tours and recordings in the 1980s. In later years, he worked as a realtor. In the 2010s, Bachman was charged twice with sexual assault but was not convicted in either case.
