Golf Legend
Tom Weiskopf played golf at Ohio State University where many said he was the “next Jack Nicklaus.” He went on to a successful pro golf career winning 16 PGA Tour titles. Weiskopf was known for having plenty of power in his swing and for his temper which earned him the nickname “The Towering Inferno.” His career year came in 1973 when he won 7 titles including the British Open played at Royal Troon in Scotland. He played on two Ryder Cup teams and won the 1995 U.S, Senior Open on the PGA Tour Champions circuit. After his pro career, he became a noted golf designer whose resume includes TPC Scottsdale.
Notable Quote
“I go back to the first time I played St. Andrews,” Weiskopf said. “I think it was 1970 and I drove the ball on the green at 9, 10, 12 and 18. I never did it on the same day because they were all at different directions. I think it should be no different than a reachable par 5. I told (design partner Jay Morrish) I want to put a reachable par 4 on all of our golf courses. He said it was a great idea. I’ve put at least one if not two at all of the 73 golf courses I’ve done. – Detroit Free Press
