Trevor Strnad (1981–2022), lead singer for the Black Dahlia Murder

by Linnea Crowther

Trevor Strnad was the lead singer for the death metal band the Black Dahlia Murder.

Musical career

Strnad was a founding member of the Black Dahlia Murder, formed in Waterford, Michigan in 2001. The band’s debut album, “Unhallowed,” was released in 2003, followed by eight other full-length albums that all charted on the Billboard 200. The Black Dahlia Murder became one of the most popular death metal bands, led by Strnad’s rasping screams and referring to their style as “melodic death metal.” Several of their albums charted in the top five on the U.S. hard rock chart. Strnad was one of only two original members who remained with the band through their most recent release, 2020’s “Verminous.”

Strnad on his vocal style

“I had to actually learn what I was doing after a while. In the first years of the band, I just literally screamed bloody murder every time. You couldn’t have told me back then that professional vocalists were calm onstage and had all these techniques. Learning to breathe was really the biggest change for me and empowered me to sing a lot more rapidly.” —from a 2020 interview for Loudwire
