Vicki Anderson (1939–2023), singer with the James Brown Revue

by Linnea Crowther

Vicki Anderson, a soul singer with the James Brown Revue, also recorded a number of singles as a solo performer.

Vicki Anderson’s legacy

Anderson joined James Brown’s (1933–2006) band as a backup singer in the 1960s, becoming the lead female vocalist for several years through 1972. While in the band, she met Bobby Byrd (1934–2007), who collaborated closely with Brown as a co-founder of the Famous Flames. The two eventually left the James Brown Revue and married in 1970.

Anderson began her solo career while she was with Brown’s band, releasing singles such as the feminist anthem “The Message from the Soul Sisters.” Her other solo songs included “Here Is My Everything,” recorded with Byrd, as well as “Super Good,” “No More Heartaches, No More Pain,” and “Don’t Throw Your Love in the Garbage Can.”

In later years, Anderson’s music took on new life as it became popular with devotees of the rare groove movement in the U.K. She toured the U.K. on the strength of that revival in the 1980s and ‘90s. In 2003, Anderson and Byrd, along with two other Famous Flames bandmates, sued Brown for nonpayment of royalties on several of the band’s hits as well as royalties stemming from samples of their songs. The lawsuit was dismissed, as the statute of limitations had expired.
