John Walton Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 28, 2005.
LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (AP) - Wal-Mart heir John T. Walton, who threw his considerable financial support behind efforts to educate low-income children, has died in the crash of a homemade, experimental aircraft.

Walton, of Jackson, Wyoming, crashed shortly after takeoff Monday from Jackson Hole Airport in Grand Teton National Park, the company said. The cause of the crash was not known and will be investigated, officials said. Walton was 58.

"I think all you can say is he was just a good man and today, you grieve," Jay Allen, Wal-Mart senior vice president of corporate affairs, told The Morning News of Springdale.

Walton, one of three sons of Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton and a member of the company's board, was a major advocate of school vouchers, supporting efforts to create taxpayer-funded ways for students to attend private schools.

Walton founded the Children's Scholarship Fund in 1998 to provide low-income families with money to send their children to private schools. The foundation started with $67 million from the Walton Family Foundation and benefited more than 67,000 children.

In March, Forbes magazine listed John Walton as No. 11 on its list of the world's richest people with a net worth of $18.2 billion. He was tied with his brother Jim, one spot behind his brother Rob, and just ahead of his sister, Alice, and his mother, Helen.

"I certainly have nothing negative to say about the man at all. He was a prince," said Walton's former wife, Washington County Circuit Judge Mary Ann Gunn. "He loved to build things. He loved motorcycles. He built his own motorcycle."

The plane he died flying was an experimental ultralight aircraft with a small, gasoline-powered engine and wings wrapped in fabric similar to heavy-duty sail cloth, officials said.

Joan Anzelmo, a spokeswoman for Grand Teton National Park, said rangers will investigate the crash, as is done with any major accident in the park.

She said Walton, "well-known and much-loved in this valley, died doing something that he loved to do."

Jim Courtovich, who spent two years getting the Children's Scholarship Fund off the ground, said Walton was down to earth and, like his father, not above doing chores himself. One time, skiing in Jackson Hole, he said Walton "had to leave early because he had to caulk his chimney."

John Walton was a major stakeholder in Wal-Mart, with about 12 million shares of the company's stock. He also shared ownership of about 1.7 billion shares with his family in a joint partnership called Walton Enterprises LLC. Walton joined the board of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. in 1992.

John Walton was an Army veteran who served with the Green Berets as a medic during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Silver Star for saving the lives of several members of his unit while under enemy fire, according to the company.

He attended the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio, and served as a board member of the Walton Family Foundation, which played a key role in fundraising in the University of Arkansas' recent Campaign for the 21st Century. The Walton family made a $300 million gift to the campaign in 2002.

Besides his mother and siblings, Walton is survived by his wife, Christy, and son, Luke.

My sincerest condolences to the Walton family! My mother, Alma Schattenberg, was extremely proud of having been a long-time WalMart associate in Nacogdoches, and of her personal acquaintance with "Mr. Sam". She greatly admired his genuineness & his caring for humanity; it sounds as if his son John was a carbon copy of his dad in those qualities!

I am a US Army Aviator who flew combat missions into Laos and Cambodia with the 57th AHC Gladiators. Our Mission was FOB II CCC which was the same mission that John Walton was involved with up North. I did not know John personnaly, but I knew men like him. They are all heros. They did heroic deeds that will never be recorded but they did them not for the glory or fame, but for the team and mission they were given. I am proud to be associated with MACV SOG and to have known men like John T. Walton

I never knew who John T Walton was until I read the major holders in First Solar, Inc. His legacy is carrying on in a company that is doing their part in making this country more energy independent. I know if he was still here, he would be very much involved in these activities.

I had no idea of the walton legacy associated to Wal-Mart. I aways wondered if they were the same people as from the Television series...no idea

John Walton was so special to us here in DC in our fight for quality education for our children. His support and encouragement meant the world to me and the parents I work with. When we got discouraged he was always there with us and we will continue to move forward in his memory. God bless John and his family.

I first met John in the late 60's while working at a crop dusting service in Ganado, Texas. He just arrived in a Volkswagon camper and was in the process of cleaning it out when I saw a flyer saying Wal-Mart. I opened it to see a picture of a man by the name of Sam Walton and asked John if he was kin. He said his father started the stores and there were 24 of them at the time. John was just hired here as a crop duster and for the next year or so I was priviledged to get to know John. He was an excellent pilot and enjoyed life. Many times on a hot day here in Texas I saw him get out of the open cockpit Stearman aircraft and dive into the rice canal to get refreshed from the heat. I was right behind him laughing and enjoying the fun. We enjoyed some grand times together. I saw a person who really enjoyed life and nature. My heart goes out to all those who knew him as I can say that he was truly a one of a kind. By the way John I did go ahead like you suggested and get my pilot licenses in 1972. Only thing you have on me now is that you don't need a plane to fly in. Thanks for the memories. They will always be a part of my life. Joe

To Christy and Lucas,

It was nearly a year before I knew that John was one of THE Waltons, I was touched by your candid, understated and unpretentious lives that was so much John.

I was part of the F-27 Owners Assn. purchasing it in ’88 after such a long wait in getting the manufacturing just right, I ate at your table at Christmas, and was part of the troop that banged and clanged it’s way down Baja on the first Corsair adventures.

I have been taking ultralight lessons and a friend mentioned a Wal-Mart heir in an ultralight accident. I was so busy it was a week before the gnawing sense would become a gasp as I logged on to the story. I was deeply moved. The loss of a man so talented, loving and devoid of any aire of wealth or power is such a sad thing.

Thanks John for being who you were. For sharing your family, passions and talents with us. We are better for the experience.

I am so very sorry for your loss. Hopefully it helps to know all the good works John did thru the good works he did. I am a divorced mother of 2 sons. If it wasn't for them receiving the Kids First Scholarship 3 years ago I don't know where they'd be in their education. My oldest son (currently going into 8th grade) was doing very poorly in 4th grade(in public school) and his teacher had basically given up. I received the scholarship and sent him to a private montessori school. He is now an A - B student and loves school. My younger son is speech delayed and learning delayed and started at the montessori school with his brother that same year for kindergarten. He was involved in the public early intervention program and they told me he would probably never talk and had him using a hand held computer with pictures to communicate. I didn't agree with this. So I applied and received a scholarship for him also. Although he spent 2 years in kindergarten he is now going into 2nd grade and has not used a computer to communicate since. He is also not that far behind his peers anymore. Although he still has some delays I feel that without that scholarship my son would not be talking today!!!! Thank You So VERY Much.

Dearest Walton Family:

My family and I would like to send our condolences to you on the loss of a great and humble humanitarian in education.

In 1997 I was put in the position of dealing with both the outside world as well as the inside world of my home as I became a new single parent of 5 children. One area was how to be a knowledgeable parent when it came to my children being correctly educated in today’s times. I have become more aware of the problems in my children’s learning environment and I felt that they needed to be challenged in order to deal with the world’s bumps and lumps. And in this search, I was told about the KidsFirst program that gives scholarships to families in need. I want to thank you for your very generous contributions to the KidsFirst program. Presently, 2 of my children, Joseph and Jennifer, attend HOPE ACADEMY, a Christian school that is Unashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, located in the inner city of Minneapolis, MN., and they have been truly challenged by their instructors spiritually, morally, and physically. I can see the difference in their demeanor as they let their conscience be their guide in making the correct decisions in life with their peers. As a displaced worker your contributions have been a burden lifter for me financially as well and I truly thank you.

I apologize for not writing you before this tragic time because I felt embarrassed that I could not provide for my children’s education, however I am more confident now in excepting the lovely gift to better educate them.

Again, I want to thank you for your generous heart and continued contributions to the KidsFirst program. It has been and is still a blessing.

In His Grace,

The Hampton

John Walton's generosity has allowed my son a quality Catholic education through Kids First Scholarship and also enabled me to become a licensed teacher without the worry of my son's schooling. I know I am a better parent because of his generosity. For this I will be forever grateful. He will not be forgotten.

I sincerely regret your loss. John played a major role in allowing my son to attend a catholic school. Due to many losses myself with close family members and the effect it has played on my diabetes since age 10(now over 40 years) I became disabled in the past few years, yet continue to raise my only son age 12. Not that it makes your loss any easier(it is never easy) I have lost my mother after eight years battling altzheimers, my brother(a father to me) at age 45 due to an auto accident, my goddaughter who was pregnant and shot accidentally, and my father all within a 10 year period. One thing I know is that there is no material thing that can replace health, family or happiness. The only advice I have is that through tragedy and loss there is gain in the perspective the survivors choose to make with the rest of the thier life and the living. LOVE is most valuable in reaching out to family members and the rest of the community you support. I support you and your family in any way possible with kindness and love and most of all appreciation for helping my son attend school. This is how John Walton will live on through the lifes he has helped and influenced. What a legacy...there is nothing greater for the short time we are here on earth. He and the many great others will live on in our hearts forever.

sincerely,

Letter from Heaven

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

FOR THE WALTON FAMILY AND FRIENDS

HERE IS A POEM FOR YOU

MISS ME ~ BUT LET ME GO...

WHEN I CAME THE THE END OF THE ROAD

AND THE SUN HAS SET FOR ME.

I WANT NO RITES IN A GLOOM FILLED ROOM.

WHY CRY FOR A SOUL SET FREE.

MISS ME A LITTLE ~ BUT NOT TOO LONG.

AND NOT WITH YOUR HEAD BOWED LOW.

REMEMBER THE LOVE WE ONCE SHARED,

MISS ME ~ BUT LET ME GO.

FOR THIS IS THE JOURNEY THAT WE ALL MUST TAKE, AND EACH MUST GO ALONE.

IT'S ALL PART OF THE MASTER'S PLAN,

A STEP ON THE ROAD TO HOME.

WHEN YOU ARE LONELY AND SICK OF HEART, GO TO THE FRIENDS WE KNOW.

AND BURY YOUR SORROWS IN DOING GOOD DEEDS.

MISS ME ~ BUT LET ME GO.

MY THOUGHTS ARE WITH YOU ALL AT THIS TIME. MY BEST TO YOU.
