Chester "Chet" Eugene DesMarais, 67, of Monticello died peacefully on November 16, 2016 at home surrounded by his family after a valiant nine year, three-time battle with cancer. Chet was born in Monticello on December 6, 1948 to M.T. and Mabel DesMarais and graduated from St. Mary's Catholic School in Waverly in 1966. He was a proud Vietnam War veteran, serving in the Air Force from 1967 - 1971. After his service, he married Janice Rumsey in 1974 and together they raised four children who admired their dad for his endless wisdom, always insisting on doing the right thing above all. True to his upbringing, Chet was an avid farmer. He retired from the Monticello Nuclear Generating Plant after 25 years in 2008. To those that knew him, Chet was a strong, gentle, and generous spirit who was loved by many, always having a twinkle in his eye and a quick wink to offer. Chester is survived by his wife and rock of 42 years, Janice; children Joy (Nathan) DesMarais-Lanz, Cara (Mike) Scott, Julie (Christian) Trygstad, Jacob (Katie) DesMarais; grandchildren who were the apples of his eye: Katelyn, Bailey, Nolan, Olivia, Everett, Davin, and Baby DesMarais; mother Mabel DesMarais; siblings Joseph (Jeanette) DesMarais, Curtis (Carol) DesMarais, Randal (Brenda) DesMarais, Connie DesMarais, Karen (Jake) Mortvedt, Christine Hafften; and countless nephews, nieces, and friends. He is preceded in death by his father, M.T. DesMarais, father- and mother-in-law Dale and Lucile Rumsey, and brother-in-law Douglas Rumsey. Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday 11:00 A.M. St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Buffalo. Visitation MONDAY AT THE CHURCH 4-8 P.M. Further visitation Tuesday morning at the church one hour prior to Mass. Serving the family…

Oh, I will miss his "Occasional Visit" to my office when he worked at the Nclear Plant. He always had a story for me and of course we hashed out all of the worlds problems. I truly miss that. He was always so pleasant and a pleasure to always talk to him. He had a great wife behind him, maybe that's why!
I miss those days, as I am retired from there, but the people like Chet made it better!
