Teresa Troiano-Chatrian, a.k.a. Teresa Rattazzi died on December 13, 2014 in Seattle, WA. She was born on July 30, 1938 in Monte Sant'Angelo (Apulia), one of Italy's UNESCO World Heritage Sites. She graduated with high honors from the University of Naples Medical School In Naples, Italy, and married a schoolmate, Luca Rattazzi. She followed him to the United States where he specialized in transplant surgery and pursued an academic career. After completing an Internship and a Residency at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, NY and a Renal Fellowship at the Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY, Teresa became successively an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN, the University of Florida, in Miami, FL, and the University of Washington in Seattle, WA. Subsequently, she devoted herself to the practice of Nephrology and became the Medical Director of the Auburn Kidney Center, in Auburn, WA and the founder and Medical Director of the Mt, Rainier (now Northwest) Kidney Center in Renton, WA.

After the death of her husband, Luca Rattazzi, Teresa married Gian-Emilio Chatrian, a long-time family friend and a Professor of Laboratory Medicine (Clinical Neurophysiology) and Neurologic Surgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle, WA. Subsequently, she devoted herself to the care of patients with kidney diseases while raising her three children.

Teresa enjoyed reading, hiking in the mountains and forests of the Pacific Northwest, dancing, and travelling. She had an endearing personality, was beautiful, and naturally elegant.

In the Summer 2010, Teresa and her husband moved to Horizon House where they enjoyed the kindness of Residents, Administrators, and Staff. Teresa is survived by her husband, Gian-Emilio Chatrian, her sister, Lina Troiano, her children, Luca, Marta, and Flavio Rattazzi, her step-daughter, Silvana, their respective spouses and 4 grandchildren.

My dear Teresa, not a day goes by that I don't remember you in some way and the wonderful team we became almost from the very beginning. Those memories never fade. We accomplished some great things for some very needy and sick patients...you as their caregiver and healer...me as your support and protector. I miss you and Luca more than I can every describe. I send my love to your children, whom I have known and loved for so many years, and wish them success in carving out lives that make them happy. Luca, Flavio and Marta, your parents loved you very, very much. As the daughter of a very dedicated and busy physician myself, I know only too well that family always seemed to take second place to patients. I just wish there had been more time. Love to you all...and love to your Mother and Father....always.

I worked with Teresa at VMC during residency and then as a colleague and have very fond and warm memories of her. She was an amazing inspiration. She was beautiful, smart, warm and loving. I still think of her often. I feel so fortunate to have known her. My condolences to her family. She will be greatly missed.

My condolences have already been personally extended to her family and my husband Larry joins me here. There are no words to express the depth of sorrow at her loss. She was a remarkable woman and I shall miss everything that made her so amazing: her spirit, her compassion, her devotion to her patients, her wit, her love of family, her strength, her elegance....and one could go on and on. After her phone call in
1983 from which our relationship began, through opening her first pivate practice office with her and working with her as that practice grew, through sharing all of the joys and sorrows, both personal and professional, in our lives...to this terrible darkness that descended on that brilliant mind and finally took her...we have a 30+ year history that encompassed all that went on in her life, both professional and personal. Our proudest moment was establishing the first independent dialysis center in the south end. It was a community effort of which we can all be proud. It became part of Northwest Kidney Centers and has now relocated to another site in Renton and renamed, but in large silver letters at the door of the large rooms where meetings are held are the beautiful words " Teresa Rattazzi, M.D. Conference Room".
she was awed, and overcome to see those letters honoring her and for that, we are all grateful. I loved her dearly, as I love her family. What do I miss about her? Everything!! To her family, including Gianni, who adored her and was so devoted and caring of her, I can't describe my sorrow at your loss. I can only judge it by my own and know that it is beyond words.
