Marjorie Day Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 20, 2016.
Marjorie Day Marjorie Day took her final journey April 2, 2016, just days before her 96th birthday. She started her life April 27, 1920, in Coeur d'Alene, ID, as part of the William Hanson farming family. As a teenager Marjorie was buried in an avalanche and pushed up against rocks while climbing Mt. Stewart with the Spokane Mountaineers. With just one hand free, she signaled for help and was rescued to continue her exploration of life. While working toward her bachelor degree in English at Washington State University, Marjorie met the love of her life, Rus Day, while skiing at Mt. Spokane, just northeast of Spokane, WA. The romance progressed and Rus proposed when they were hiking the Wonderland Trail at Mt. Rainier. She did not accept. A second proposal in August, 1923, at Paradise, Mt. Rainier, where Rus was stationed as a summer Ranger, was accepted. They were married 72 years ago on Christmas Day, 1943. While Rus continued his development of the Art Department at Everett Community College, Marjorie earned her Master's Degree in English at the University of Washington, and started her career as an English instructor at Everett Community College. During sabbaticals, the couple explored the world, traveling around it three times. After Rus retired in 1976 and Marjorie retired in 1985, they purchased the first of three motor homes they used in succession to explore the United States and Mexico. They also enjoyed a sailboat and journeyed to Alaska with it. ln 1986 Marjorie and Rus moved to a Panorama home on Chambers Lake. Marjorie joined the crew at the Panorama TV station, where she interviewed residents for live broadcasts held three times a week. Marjorie was known by her many friends for her quick wit and as an excellent conversationalist. The Panorama C&R became her home for her last few years. She leaves behind her loving husband, Rus, and two nieces in California. Her wishes were for no memorial service, but her ashes will be sprinkled with the wildflowers at Mt. Rainier.

I had the great pleasure of learning from Mrs. Day during my freshman year at Everett Community College in 1982-83. I well remember the warmth and excitement she brought to her excellent teaching. There was joy in her eyes, and she had a way of making you feel special. I remember it well, and fondly, nearly four decades later. God bless you, Mrs. Day.

Marjorie Day . . . Mrs Day . . . is there yet any way to thank you for all you did, not only for me but for so many others? Can any of us forget, ever, your gentle and quick wit, your compassion and patience, and your smile? You opened doors for us. So many doors. You gave us the courage, by example, to go forward into what we thought was uncharted ground. In a way, it was, but you guided us, so gently and with the quiet force that will define you, always.
Tnank you, Mrs Day. Thank you, Marjorie.
With love, gentle lady.

I will miss this beautiful person so very much. She was always "there" for Rus. They were always, always pleasant and helpful. Carry on Rus.

Mrs Day was my favorite instructor at Everett Community College in the late '60s. She made literature come alive and she was beautiful and vibrant inside and out. Every day I could hardly wait to hear and enjoy her lectures. And I had to see what fabulous ensemble she was wearing. I can still see her big smile and feel her welcoming presence in the lecture room. Marjorie Day ALWAYS played to a full house.

Mrs. Day was so engaging. Many students who thought they didn't like literature changed their minds. She introduced us to the subtleties of characters and showed us how to see each piece of literature as art, looking at the same work from various angles. I learned to recognize great literature and 'tho I didn't major in English, I am a better person for having studied under her. She left a lifelong impression and I am privileged to have been her student.
