James McCain Obituary

MCCAIN Dr. James Robert McCain, Sr., 89, was born in McKenzie, Tn on August 29, 1924, to Robert S. and Mary Martin McCain. He went home to be with his Lord on May 12, 2014, in Jacksonville, FL. While attending David Lipscomb College in Nashville, Tn, he was called to serve his country during World War II with the U.S. Army. During the war, he served with a mortar squad in George Patton's 3rd Army, 13th Armored Division, seeing combat duty in Germany during General Patton's drive through the Ruhr Valley. During his service, he distinguished himself as a Master Marksman with both the M-1 rifle and carbine. Following VE Day, he was assigned to the 59th Armored Infantry Battalion for the planned invasion of Japan. While still in the Army, he married Juanita Jeannette Eubank on August 1, 1945 in Henry, Tn. In 1951 he was graduated from the University of Tennessee Medical School and began pediatric practice in Jacksonville, FL, in 1953, retiring in 1993. During that time, he helped found the Child Guidance Clinic and served as its head for many years. In addition, he was a Board Member of the Duval County Medical Society and Chief of Pediatrics at St. Vincent's Hospital. Dr. Jim was 14 when he was baptized into Christ by his grandfather. He subsequently served as Elder, song leader, and Bible teacher at the Lakeshore Church of Christ in Jacksonville, and most recently at the Julington Creek Church of Christ. Dr. Jim's greatest pleasures were serving the Lord, spending time with family and friends, gardening, baking, and music. Dr. Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Juanita, and children: James R. McCain, Jr., Stephen A. McCain (Cindy) and Bronwyn McCain Benoit (Bob). Also, grandchildren Josiah McCain, Julie McCain Shaw, Nicole Nanney, Emily McCain, Katie Benoit and six great grandchildren. Pall bearers are Lucian Acuff, Josiah McCain, Gabe Shaw, Wendell Bowman, Ed Culver, and Mike Lyons. Honorary pall bearers are his professional partners, Dr. James Moss, Dr. James Townsend, Dr. Alan Perlman and Dr. William Hansberry. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Hardage-Giddens, Hendricks Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 5-7pm. Interment will be in Jacksonville National Cemetery on Friday. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Wolfson's Children's Hospital. Not sure what to say?

December 30, 2015

Ok, I skipped the comments because everyone felt pretty much as I did, so why say the same thing over and over? Because Dr. McCain's care was more than we can describe.
One Christmas, maybe even Christmas Eve, I had a terrible ear ache and my mom called him after she had exhausted all "home remedies." He met us at the old St. Luke's on 8th St. And diagnosed it, correctly, as an inner ear infection exacerbated by hypoglycemia. This without modern technology and today's blood glucose monitors. He was dead on. I cannot say how many times in the '50's and early 60''s he met me and my sweet mother to work out our problems. God bless him. I'm sorry I didn't say so earlier. What a great and wonderful man.

Our family is saddened by the loss of such a fine physician and human being. Dr. McCain was kind, compassionate and would always be able to calm my mother when I was sick or banged up from a failed adventure. He will be missed by so many and our thoughts and prayers go out to his entire family.

Such a loss for us all, but what a gift to our Father. There are those who touch our lives and forever change us; Dr. McCain was such a person. I will be forever grateful to have been blessed knowing both he and his loving wife, Ms. Nita. Both he and his wife are two of the most beautiful persons I have known. My most sincerest condolences to his family, and most of all, Ms. Nita.

I was born at St. Vincent's in 1957, my brother in 1960. Dr. McCain was our pediatrician. All these years later I can still remember what a sweet man and excellent Doc he was. I am SO glad to know that he was a man of The Lord too! I was truly saddened when my parents told me of his passing. My prayers for his family in their time of sorrow.

Our loss, but angels are rejoicing at another faithful soul's home-coming. Great man, great father-figure, and great example of living for Jesus. Will always remember his Key Lime pie and his love for nature and all things good. Wonderful memories. My thoughts and prayers are with all the family and friends who loved him so.

Nita, Steve, Jim, Bronwyn and respective family members,
We were deeply saddened by Dr. Jim's passing. We all know that Heaven is now his home. He will be missed. Dr. McCain was a gentle man, wonderful doctor, and as a Christian man, he was humbled before the little children he cared for , medically, over the years. They were his calling and he excelled.
Nita, remember when Bo used to do your yard work? That just doesn't seem that long ago, does it? You are in our thoughts and prayers.
In His name,
Bo & Karen

Nita and family...Caroline and I were saddened when our granddaughter, Meghan, told us that "Doc." had died. We will carry our memories of kindness and principles that guided him through life. I have missed seeing him (and you) working out in his yard across from our son and his family in "the Plantation". He was truly a child of God and his soul is now in the Heaven we believe in and pray for. We share your sorrow. You and your family have a lifetime of memories to hold you close together. Trust God.

From the Pendergast family to the McCain family, please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers at this time. Dr. McCain was a true “gentle-man” possessing the kindest of hearts which showed in the way he lived his life – a man of faith, family, love and laughter. I was so sorry to hear about Dr. McCain's passing. Not only was he my sister's and my pediatrician (1950's-1960's), he was our children's too (1970's-1990's) . Our family felt blessed to have Dr. McCain and the rest of the practice as our pediatricians. May God wrap his loving arms of comfort and peace around you all.

Dr. Jim was our neighbor for a short period of time until we moved away. He was a gentle, sweet man who exhibited the love of Christ and was kind to his neighbors. As a pediatrician he took joy in seeing our baby boy grow in his early years. Blessings to Juanita and family in this time of loss.

So sad to hear of the loss of Dr. McCain. If ever there was a person that was born to be a Pediatrician, it was Dr. McCain. I have very fond memories of all the many occasions I had to seek his advice as a parent trying to raise 5 kids. He probably never knew how much our talks and his advise and counsel meant. On behalf of my family, 5 children and some of their children, he will be sorely missed. We knew how difficult it was for him to retire "the first time" and how happy we were when he came out of that retirement. With all those children & grandchildren grown, I lost track of him. Heard he went to North Carolina. Glad to read that he finally lived the remainder of his life here in Jacksonville no doubt everyday walking around the many children he cared for for all those years. Rest in Peace Dr. McCain. Your work on earth is finished but you will never be forgotten.

Mr. Doc as our family called him we loved having you and your wife as neighbors. As little kids me and my sister learned alot from you the one important thing i learned is to never give up no matter what. Almost everyday we would see him gardening and putting all his hard work into something no matter how he felt. I can only hope the family is okay and anything I can do for anyone I will.

diagnosed with diabetes in 1958, Dr. McCain guided my mother and I through all of my pre-teen years. Dr. McCain's wisdom, methods and guidance allowed me to live a completely normal life. To this day, I attribute my well being to Dr. McCain and his associates...Moss,Townsend and Perlman. Always kind and patient, Dr. McCain was truly a role model and man of distinction. I have and always will hold him in highest regards.

In 1971 My boy became violently ill.. We had called ahead and was told Dr. McCain would meet us there The image of what happened next was burned into my memory forever.. My wife and I were filing out insurance papers.... the swinging door flew up and out come Dr. McCain.. he says give me that child, but we are filling out the insurance papers... That can wait.
I never forgot that, never. Doctors like Dr. McCain don't exist anymore.

To the McCain Family,

I would like say that I am very sorry for your loss and to let you know how Dr. McCain left a lasting effect on me. I am 51 years old now, Dr. McCain was my pediatric doctor when his office was on Normandy Blvd. I can honestly say that I think about him every time I pass the area where the office was. I still see the yellow tile and frosted glass of his office in my mind when I look at that Taco bell. I've gauged every doctor I've had through the years against him (only one has come close). He was so reassuring, gentle, and kind; he always put this scared little boy at ease.

I read in the obituary about his outstanding military service and his devotion to Christianity. He no doubt handled everything in life with the same care as he did with his patients.

I'm sure there are many, many more people that feel the same as I do.

You all are in my prayers.
