Gerald Curtis Conaway, 82, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2015, at Alaska Regional Hospital. He was born on Feb. 15, 1933, in Manson, Wash., and grew up in Oak Harbor, Wash. Gerry is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marilyn Eylar Conaway; and their two sons, Stanford Conaway and Reed Conaway. Gerry was an artist first and foremost, after teaching Art at University of Washington he moved to Alaska in 1965 and began teaching at Alaska Methodist University in Anchorage. Many of Gerry's works may be found around Alaska. These include the William Henry Seward Memorial, the Benny Benson Memorial, eight local works at elementary schools and the Federal Building in Fairbanks. His sculpture "Maquette for Arctic Amphibian" (1979) is in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, baking cookies and restoring cars. Gerry was also a skilled jewelry maker and truly loved cats and peanut butter sandwiches. After recovering from a heart transplant in 1998, he held an art show at University of Washington Medical Center where the operation had been done. He was a wonderful Father and visionary artist. Marilyn, although I really never knew Jerry, I heard about him through you and I felt as though I knew him. I can attest as to his being a quality cookie baker. Please accept my condolences to you and your sons.

When I was researching the history of the All Alaska Juried exhibition, I interviewed Gerry about the AMU art collection and shows. He had me laughing at all the stories he told about disappearing art, the collection, even hanging a hated painting in the men's room. He was a great storyteller with a detailed memory.

I was Gerry's art student at Alaska Methodist University in the mid '60s. Lately, I was privileged to visit him often at his place of residence, show him pictures from our yearbooks, watch him smile as we shared moments together, and even watch him point out people we both knew from 50 years ago. He was truly a gifted, quiet, visionary, and he drew out the very best in his students. I will miss him, and truly was privileged to know him and to view the world in a very different way. I will miss him. My condolences to Marilyn with whom I worked in the Anchorage School District. Peace and condolences to the family.
