Maggie Alons, age 101, of Sanborn, Iowa, formerly of Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, July 13, 2006, at the Prairie View Home in Sanborn. Funeral services will be Monday, July 17, 2006, at 10:30 A.M. at the First Christian Reformed Church. Rev. Greg Timmer officiating. Burial in the East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon. Visitation will be Sunday, July 16, 2006, from 2-6 P.M. with the family present from 2-4 P.M. at the Andringa Funeral Home Sheldon Funeral Service. ARRANGEMENTS BY Andringa Funeral Home Sheldon Funeral Service Larry R. Andringa, Director Maggie Alons, daughter of John and Grietje (Riekema) Holtrop, was born on August 29, 1904, in Hospers, Iowa. She lived her youth in the Hospers, area, where she attended a country school and later worked at various homes helping with busy families. She was united in marriage to Ben Alons of Hospers, Iowa, on February 21, 1923. They farmed by Hospers for 4 years before moving to a farm northeast of Sheldon, for 11 years. In 1937, they moved to a farm northwest of Sanborn, which was their home until retiring to Sheldon in 1960. They enjoyed traveling together. Ben passed away on March 4, 1989, after celebrating their 66th wedding anniversary. Maggie was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church of Sheldon, for 80 years. She was a member of the Golden Hour Society, the Christian School Auxiliary and the Christian Retirement Home Auxiliary. Maggie moved to the Christian Retirement Home in 1992, and to the Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn, in October of 1995, where she passed away on Thursday, July 13, 2006, at the age of 101. Maggie showed love to everyone and true hospitality by welcoming everyone with a lunch and a visit, who came to their home. Friends and family were also invited to play games when they came. Love for her children and grandchildren were shown in many ways by her words and actions and her definite Christian principles. Those left to cherish her memories are 4 sons and daughters-in-law: Dan and Mathilda Alons of Sanborn, IA, Leeroy and Donna Alons of Washington, NC, Merl and Rosa Alons of Sun City, AZ, Roger and Jan Alons of Troy, IL; two daughters and sons-in-law: Gertrude and Maynard Hofman of Sanborn, IA, Marie and Sid Vander Griend of Sheldon, IA; daughter-in-law: Marlene Alons of Sanborn, IA; 34 grandchildren; 77 great grandchildren; 30 great great grandchildren; one sister-in-law: Mary Holtrop of Fulda, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband: Ben; one son: John Alons; 2 grandsons; two great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; 4 brothers and 2 sisters.
