Lee Jordan Obituary

Lee Brookins Jordan passed suddenly on Dec. 31, 2018. He was 88 years old. Lee was cherished by his family and his church, and deeply respected within the community he dearly loved.
Lee was born in Birmingham, Ala., on Sept. 22, 1930, to Gordon B. and Nell Jordan. He is survived by his sister, Nelda; wife, Barbara; and their four children, Stephan, Sonja, Sherri and Sven; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and extended family in Alabama.
He joined the Army in 1948, and asked to be stationed "any place that's warm" and arrived in Whittier, Alaska, in January. After the military, he joined with the Anchorage Times. It was there that he became part of history by creating the "WE'RE IN" newspaper headline that is now an icon of Alaska Statehood.
Lee founded the Chugiak-Eagle River Star on Jan. 14, 1971. The weekly newspaper became a center for local businesses.
Lee found his spiritual center at the Eagle River Presbyterian Church. There, he and Barbara worshipped and he enjoyed singing in the choir.
The Alaska Star was sold in the year 2000. It wasn't the only newspaper he produced, however. He also published the Cook Inlet Sports Review, the Suburbanite and the Kachemak Compass, based in Homer, Alaska.
Services for family and church members will be held on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019, at 7 p.m., in the Eagle River Presbyterian Church, 12836 Old Glenn Highway in Eagle River, Alaska. A Celebration of Life will be held for the public at the Bartlett High School Auditorium on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019, at 6 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chinooks Booster Club, cerchinooks.com; and to the Knik Little League, [email protected].

Our sincere sympathy to the families of Lee Jordan. I had the privilege of being with Lee as an assistant coach in the Knik Little League and the Babe Ruth team I believe from 1967-1969. We travelled to Montana and Idaho for various Baseball tournaments. He was a joy to be with and I especially enjoyed his coaching enthusiasm. Even though we left Alaska in 1981 we will always have fond thoughts of our time with Lee. He will be sorely missed.

Lee Jordan hired me as a reporter for the Chugiak-Eagle River Star on my second day in Alaska in 1980. During the following months I learned how much work goes into publishing a small town weekly paper and how much respect the editor and publisher of the Star commanded in that town. Lee was the real Star in the community: his radient smile greeted everyone who walked into the office. He knew everyone, even if they didnt all know him. Lee was a businessman with a big heart and a way with humor that always leaked into his stories. Chugiak-Eagle River was fortunate to have one of the best of the best for more than fifty years. My deepest sympathies to Barbara and the family. Thanks for taking a chance on a young, green journalist, Lee. I hope you find many stories to write in Heaven.
